October SENIOR NEWS: sewing patterns
Dear Seniors,
Do you sew? Or, should I ask DID you ever sew? Did you take Home Economics classes in high school? It seems these kinds of “everyday basics” classes are fading away in most high schools. Many women say they learned to sew in 4-H (even recent comments on Facebook say that).
Halloween is coming up, and many parents used to either sew a costume for their kids or put together something out of items found around the house. Do you remember kids dressed up as GHOSTS — they often just had a white sheet over them with eyes and mouth cut out, and a belt around their waist.
Lyons does have two or three women who are seamstress, and they do repair and adjustments, like for wedding dresses or jacket zippers. There is a woman in Estes Park, Sharon Gartner (Sharyn’s Sewing Studio) who opened a studio in 1993, who does old-fashion dress styles, using techniques that were popular during an earlier time period. She has won many awards for her gowns.
In a 2001 article in the Estes Park Trail-Gazette, Gartner discussed the differences between costumes and reproductions, noting that creating a “period costume” is difficult work requiring details that make the garment passable as an original from that period. Construction must use techniques of the time; no modern sewing methods. Fabrics must be authentic, avoiding modern colors and synthetics.
“There’s a lot of research that goes into creating one of these,” said Gartner in 2001. “It’s not just sewing. You have to know the techniques that they used. You have to know the fabrics. The accessories – are they crocheted or leather, how they wore their hair, buttons.” She is now retiring, as stated in a new September 2024 article in the Trail-Gazette. Check out the article for a lot of details on how she made the dresses and undergarments, including how each was layered when worn.
You can get patterns, but she says: “it is from patterns that were copied off the antique dresses. That’s how we get our patterns nowadays. They were copied from the actual dress. Very rarely will you find an actual pattern from that time frame.”
Have some fun putting together something for our Halloween Parade down Main Street, or the Rave to the Grave costume dance party in LaVern Johnson Park, or just to open your door to Trick or Treaters wearing a costume! Send me a photo, and we’ll publish it either here in the NEWSLETTER, or in the newspaper, (and maybe on the Senior Center bulletin Board!)
Have fun, and don’t eat too much candy!

HAPPENINGS at the SENIOR CENTER
The September “Picnic in the Park” is always a big turnout! The weather was a beautiful fall day. The conversations filled the air, and the food buffet was wonderful, with sandwiches, salads and snacks. Afterwards we all sang Happy Birthday to the folks, and eagerly grabbed a piece of the delectable desserts. We often see people at the picnic that we don’t see at the senior lunch room, so it’s like going to a wedding and seeing old friends.— (Photos by Kathleen Spring)
LIGHTS SHOW, BUS TRIP: Bright Nights at Four Mile is the only opportunity to experience a Tianyu festival in the Mountain West. The seniors went on a bus trip to a Light Show in Thornton. It was over an hour to get there, but well worth it. The venue was packed with tall (20 ft?) displays of objects that were lit with tiny lights and colors – like sheep and buffalo climbing a mountain, and giant butterflies, and flowers opening and closing. I have seen the light show at places like the zoo or botanic gardens in Denver, but this was 5 times as many art displays. — (Photos by Bonita Joy)
SENIOR OUTINGS & CRAFTS: Be sure to see below under “Town of Lyons” – they have added a couple of free fun activities.
LOOK AT THIS MENU: ===Rustic Italian Vegetable Bake === Over Roasted Salmon === Quinoa Stuffed Pepper Casserole === White Chicken Caprese Lasagna
Are you expecting me to say this is at a new restaurant in Lyons? Well, guess what, this is the LUNCH menu at the Lyons SENIOR CENTER! (335 Railroad Ave., next to the post office) And, yes, there are some old fashion favorites like meatloaf, and chicken enchiladas. All seniors are invited on Tues., Wedn., Thurs. all year long. You just need to call in your order by 1p.m. the day before. 303-441-1415. Seniors 60+ are only $3.00 thanks to a grant by Boulder Aging BCAAA (or what you can afford to pay); and they can bring a friend or relative for $12.00 (any age). Plus you can meet the small, warm, chatty group of seniors who have been enjoying these lunches.
MOVIE CLUB == We did not get a big response on bringing this back. We’ll give it one more try. – We could do it on a Sunday after “church and social hour,” approximately 2p.m. Or, tell us, if you prefer it on a Thursday night at 7p.m. This was VERY popular when we had it before. Lots of fun and discussion. === here’s the description === We will be bringing back the popular MOVIE DAY at the Senior Center this fall. The original series involved one Hollywood movie on Sundays, and one “non Hollywood movie” (often foreign) on a weekday evening. All films will have captions. They are followed by, maybe 20 minutes of discussion. Located at the Lyons Senior Center. WRITE ME and tell me your comments and/or sign up (as soon as possible): LovingLyonsSeniorGroup@gmail.com or contact Kathleen Spring. .
MONTHLY HEALTH ARTICLE
I had a strange severe stomach ache recently, and I didn’t know if it had to do with the two vaccines I got, or something worse. I came across an article by AARP, and thought I’d share it with you. I have cut it down by 75% and just gave the highlights. So, if this sounds like a problem you are having, you should probably seek out a doctor’s advice. I’m not giving you medical advice; just a path to take “bad stomach pain” seriously:
- Prolonged diarrhea – while it can be from a food allergy, most dont know it can be warning sign of COVID-19. More than half of COVID patients had GI symptoms. You can get anti-viral treatments.
- Blood in your stool — usually bright red is due to a hemorrhoid. But it is also a first symptom of color cancer, especially if it looks unusual. And, get a colonoscopy to check for colon polyps.
- Severe cramps after eating: classic symptom of irritable bowel syndrome.
- Difficulty swallowing: check for esophageal cancer, which is four times more likely in seniors. Or it could be an infection, ulcer, or sore from chronic acid reflux.
- Unexplained weight loss (espec. if accompanied by abdominal pain). Most seniors gain weight. If you drop 5 percent in six months, check for cancer, peptic ulcers, celiac disease, IBD or overactive thyroid.
- Chronic or prolonged constipation. If it goes on longer than seven days, see your doctor. Make sure you get enough fiber in your diet.
- Sudden, intense abdominal pain. Could be acute appendicitis – lower right side – or diverticulitis, or serious infection. This is not referring to muscle cramps from exercise, etc.
- Frequent, severe or worsening heartburn – Check for GERD, which could show precancerous in esophagus.
- Swollen abdomen – this is an actual increase in measured abdominal size. This could affect your small intestine.
- Feeling full after eating very little – common cause is gastroparesis, meaning our food stays too long in the stomach. You can get medications for it.

NEWS YOU CAN USE
==September Weather was hotter than normal, with lots of 80s and some at 90 degrees. Normal is in the mid-70s. Not a lot of rain either. And October looks like it will be following the same pattern.
==Campbell is ready to drop the “soup” — at least from its official name. Campbell Soup Co. announced its intention to change its name at an annual meeting of investors on Tuesday.
==Obits in September: James Darren, singer // Sergio Mendes, Brazilian composer // Brian Keith, actor // Will Jennings, big time lyricist (My Heart Will Go On) // James Earl Jones, actor// Maggie Smith, actor // Pete Rose, baseball. (Phil Donahue in August, TV show host). == lots of big names in one month; so sad! I haven’t included lesser known stars and singers… but, I will add John Amos, who was an occasional actor, but mainly because he was a Colorado Broncos player in the 1960s.
10/2/24 – Just a quick note to say that Boulder County BCAAA may be changing caterers for their senior lunch program. But don’t worry, healthy meals will continue to be provided on schedule.

See the Boulder County section for classes on Medicare.
Medicare – drugs = For the first time, congress negotiated directly with drug companies and lowered prices on 10 popular drugs (Eliquis went from $521 to $231).
Medicare Open Enrollment starts October 15! Did you know new benefits are coming to Medicare drug coverage next year?
Starting in 2025, all Medicare plans will include a $2,000 cap on what you pay out-of-pocket for prescription drugs covered by your plan. So, it’s more important than ever to make sure your drugs are covered.
Also starting next year, you can choose to participate in a program that spreads your out-of-pocket drug costs across the calendar year, instead of paying all at once at the pharmacy. It’s called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan — and you can opt in with your plan throughout the 2025 plan year. Contact your plan for more details.
Remember, Medicare plans can change from one year to the next, and so can your health needs. Preview and compare all your health and drug options and see if you can save. Go HERE to Preview Changes. – you can Log In, or continue “as a guest” and just enter your zip code. MEDICARE COMPARE page
