NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 9/19/24
If there ever is an emergency in town, or timely news needing to be distributed, you can trust the Lyons Recorder to put it online immediately.
Hi Folks,
The Fall Equinox will be happening this Sunday, September 20, 2024, at 8:44 a.m. Did you know that the name equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night”? During the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun moves precisely above the equator, and the sun’s path and the celestial equator align… which means the earth will be facing the sun flat on. When this happens, the length of days and nights are equal.
For most Coloradans, the signal that it is fall is the changing of the color of the aspen leaves. I won’t bog you down with another scientific explanation as to why that happens! But you can check out the article I have on “Leaf Peeping Season Starting.” It has a color map that will help you decide when and where to go for the best fall color.
I saw four tall yellow leafed aspens in a grove off of Hwy 36 coming from Estes Park last Monday. And, when I got home, the big bush in front of my house! was 25% yellow! That woke me up to fall being here, and then, of course, I started seeing small splashes of color every where I went. Check it out!
…….. from your editor, Have a good day, Kathleen Spring

NEWS YOU CAN USE
DOG PARK – comment on Lyons Happenings/Facebook: Many thanks to the Parks and Recreation staff for the new section of fence at the dog park–replacing the section that leaned and wasn’t securely in the ground. Great job, as usual.
POST OFFICE: I’ve been told that “possibly” because of the numerous complaints about Daphne, the head of the Lyons post office, has been forced to retire, and a new “nicer, more efficient” person is now in charge. — I will follow up on this, but had to share the news!
ACCIDENTS: 9/8/24 – Rocky Mt Natl Park – According to the complaint, on Sunday, September 8, 2024, a Dodge Ram truck drove through the Grand Lake entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park and did not stop. A Park Ranger attempted to engage with the vehicle, which continued to drive erratically through the park at high rates of speed. Near the junction of Mill’s Drive and Highway 36 the Dodge Ram collided with a Toyota Corolla. Three people in the Toyota were injured, one critically. The driver of the Dodge Ram fled the scene on foot. Area law enforcement searched for the driver, who was found the next day after a homeowner in Estes Park reported a break-in at their residence. Northglenn Man, 24, officially charged with Assault In National Park Crash that Injured three. ==== 9/10/24 A local reported on the closure of Hwy 36 at about 2-3pm on Tuesday: truck vs. Subaru? Accident. Our delay down to Lyons was stop, go, wait-resulting in a total of a 15 minute delay. Thank goodness neither vehicle went over the side. It appears both drivers are shaken up, but not transported via ambulance. ==== 9/12/24 Blue Mtn Road — a single car accident. Went off the road pretty far. There was minor damage to the car. I did not hear about injuries. Fire dept. and paramedics and state patrol were on scene. === 9/16/24 Accident involving a cyclist at Hwy 36 and Neva Rd. (north of Broadway in Boulder). Pick up truck’s side view mirror hit and caused the death of the cyclist. ==== 9/18/24 this is not close to us, but interesting: I-70 was closed for 12!! Hours Tuesday when a truck travelling east bound, rolled over and fell into the lower west bound lanes, scattering parts over all lanes. (you may recall that the east and west roads sit on separate pillars from each other, during part of I-70)
ALMOST RAIN: it seems like we cant get enough rain this month! But on Sunday, 9/15/24, dark clouds blew thru, and we got a double rainbow – 5 people posted photos on Facebook! — (We hope to get rain Saturday.)

CATS ARENT TROPHIES, Proposition 127. === I have received several “letters to the editor” in SUPPORT of the proposition that refers to “trophy hunting.” These are big important people writing the letters. They ask that you not let our fear of “cats” influence your vote, and that this would lead to more commercial outfitters who use dogs and GPS tracking to shoot animals (not real hunting for food type of thing). My latest letter was from a former head of US Fish and Wildlife, and current President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. I’m not going to publish them all, as they’d fill up half the newspaper, but I’m sure you can find them online, and at other bigger newspapers.
