September SENIOR NEWS: unions over the years
Dear Seniors,
Were you, or a family member, ever in a Union? There’s a lot of talk in the political arena about unions these days, and how it was the middle class, and perhaps blue-color workers who MADE AMERICA, and “let’s bring it back.”
But what are the facts? In Colorado, 6.3% of workers were unionized in 2021, compared to 10.3% nationwide, according to new numbers from the Bureau of Statistics.
Well, that is today, but what about years ago?
The Colorado Labor Wars were a series of labor strikes in 1903 and 1904 in the U.S. state of Colorado, by gold and silver miners and mill workers represented by the Western Federation of Miners (WFM). Opposing the WFM were associations of mine owners and businessmen at each location, supported by the Colorado state government. The strikes were notable and controversial for the accompanying violence, and the imposition of martial law by the Colorado National Guard in order to put down the strikes.
A nearly simultaneous strike in Colorado’s northern and southern coal fields was also met with a military response by the Colorado National Guard. In these battles the state government, with one exception, sided with the mine operators.
Other noteworthy strikes over the decades in the US involved the United Auto Workers (UAW). It is still front and center today, and they proudly announced that they were again endorsing the Democratic candidate. Today we see strikes by airplane employees, health care workers, writers, and more. It’s hard to believe that President Biden was the first president to walk a picket line (2024).
Have you given it some thought? Who do you support? Well, happy LABOR DAY (earlier this week). I hope you honored your labor and took some time off!

MONTHLY HEALTH ARTICLE
HOW DOES EXERCISE AFFECT SLEEP?
Many people are told to improve their overall health when they’re trying to prevent cardiovascular disease. What they may not realize is that nutrition and exercise are not the sole components of physical health, but so is sleep. In fact, the more we move, the more our sleep improves and the healthier we feel.
To that end, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) Adviser created a resource, How Does Exercise Affect Sleep?, that covers:
- how deep sleep affects physical recovery, immune function, and cognitive health
- how stress, sleep and exercise are inextricably linked
- how older adults have unique needs with regard to exercise and sleep
A couple of takeaways: ===Exercise produces some of the most important hormones responsible for regulating our sleep. === Exercise increases melatonin, reduces stress, and helps lower your body temperature to aid sleep. === But remember! to NOT exercise in the two hours before you go to bed.
Look for small ‘wins’ as you build new habits of exercise, whether or not sleep has been an issue. Start with doing it once a week. Build it into your “daily habits.”
