Colorado has the most diverse legislature in the US – notes on Denver mayor
Colorado has the most diverse legislature in the country! It started back in 2020, when it claimed 23 percent of the seats are owned by Blacks and Latinos. (One hundred total seats)
The Colorado Democratic Latino Caucus is a group of 13 Latino legislators from across Colorado. Former Senator Polly Baca, the first Hispanic woman in the country elected to serve in both a state House and Senate
There are currently 11 members of the Colorado Black Democratic Legislative Caucus in 2023, the largest in state history. Only four percent of the population is Black. Back in 2009, the state was the first in the nation where blacks lead both chambers of its Legislature.
The state will have the largest LGBTQ caucus of any legislature in the country, according to the caucus chair.
As of November 2022, Colorado’s state Legislature in 2023 has more women than men for the first time in the state’s history. Twelve of the 35 Senate seats and 39 of the 65 House seats are occupied by women. Nevada was the first state to have more women than men in a state legislature in 2016. Colorado became the first state to have any women elected to a state legislature in 1894, when three women were elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. And for the first time in Colorado’s history, the House’s top three leadership positions will all be held by women.
The General Assembly consists of 100 members – 35 Senators and 65 Representatives. Senators serve four-year terms, while Representatives serve two-year terms. All members are limited to serving for eight consecutive years in their chamber – four terms for Representatives and two terms for Senators.

Denver has a new mayor
In July, Denver voted in a new mayor: Mike Johnson.
The new mayor wants to move the homeless into existing rental units, converted hotels, safe spaces, tiny homes, and unused commercial buildings. He said the “sweeps” would continue in the meantime due to health and safety issues for the surrounding residents. The goal is to get 1,000 people who are currently experiencing homelessness on the street into housing by the end of the year.
“It is a human rights challenge because we know right now we have people living and dying on the streets of Denver,” Johnston said at the news conference. “We know we have people who need access to support and services who can’t get them. We know it is a public health challenge. We know it is an economic development challenge. We know all of the key visions we have for the city revolve around making sure those who are most at risk right now can get access to the services they need.”
The last Republican mayor to be in office ended in 1963. All citywide elected officials have four-year terms, with a maximum of three terms. Michael Hancock was the last mayor, and he was in office from July 18, 2011–July 17, 2023.
