Ode to My Girlfriends, My Sisters from the Heart
To all of the women who stand so strong and so tall,
This poem is for all of them each one of them all.
Thanks to Kathy O’Malley, about her girlfriends she wrote a poem,
So beautiful it was, she inspired me to write my own.
In the circle of life, we’re all young then old we become,
Some days are not easy, some days are not fun.
So, these words I have written as heartfelt as can be,
For all the strong women who have deeply touched me.
As little girls we hold our Moms hand, as she protects and we learn,
When older we become, Mom’s frail hand we hold again,
to protect and to comfort because now it’s our turn.
Heroes I have, such as Oprah and Dolly, and far too many to name,
But no bigger hero do we have than our Mom’s, who ask for no fame.
Young girls as you look in the mirror of your Mom’s eyes,
Be good to her always for time truly flies.
Choose lifetime long girlfriends and always keep in mind,
Choose ones who are loyal and fun, and those who are kind.
Appreciate every day, and be grateful for every healthy breath we are given,
Because there’s no guarantee on how many years we’ll be livin’.
And don’t feel too sad when dark stormy days may pass through,
Storms produce rainbows, so always look up and you might see one or two.
So how does it happen so fast, how can it be?
As little girls we giggled and wondered what does the future hold for me?
Yesterday is today and tomorrow will quickly be here,
Life passes so fast each and every busy year.
So, what do we do when our friend Jacquelene tells us news that is sad?
She was diagnosed with cancer and for her we feel so bad.
We rally around her ready to put up a good fight,
But our tears we can’t stop as they come in the quiet dark of night.
One by one each friend offers their support and their love,
I believe they are all angels who were sent from above.
Their strength and their humor so steadfast and so true,
Without our loving girlfriends what would we do?
Marriage, birth, death, divorce, we’ve been through it all,
As these trying times will pass, we always stand tall.
Our dear friend Jacquelene knows alone she will never be,
Her girlfriends will hold her up, and we do it happily.
Our paths in life on this journey we must take,
Filled with much fun and much pain but it’s one we must make.
Thanks to our girlfriends who share in this ride,
They’re sisters we chose with our hearts, who stand by our side.
The years go by so quickly we were always told,
But you cannot truly understand until you are old.
As older women we now laugh, and we joke about the past,
But tears wet our eyes when we think how the years went so fast.
We laugh and we cry and we go on each day,
As older we get and more pain comes our way.
Old stories become new as our memories start to fade,
I’m so Thankful long ago these amazing girlfriends that I made.
Many tears from pain but much more from laughter we share,
We are always there for each other to show how much we care.
Thank you to all the crazy loving girlfriends who keep each other good company,
Without our sisters from the heart where would we all be…

COMMENTS: Jacquelene, who is referenced in the poem, was diagnosed with breast cancer. — Nancy says: It was such a sad, gut wrenching time. I couldn’t stop thinking of how much her life changed while dealing with all that, and how many strong and loving friends we have in our group. The poem just came to me one night so I wrote it down then I read it to her at her home surrounded by all of our close friends while she was still feeling somewhat good. Sadly she has since passed away 1 year ago this May. — The poem was just about our group of close friends & how lucky we all are to have each other especially in the hardest of times.
