NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 5/18/23

If there ever is an emergency in town, or timely news needing to be distributed, you can trust the Lyons Recorder to put it online immediately.
Dear Readers,
Did you know that electric cars are racing in Formula-one races? It’s called Formula-E. Who knew they could drive that fast? Yes, all the big names are there: Maserati, Jaguar, and Penske… As you may know, they now have cameras inside some of the cars, and instead of the familiar roar, the cars give off a loud squeal! The e-race circuit is hitting all the major cities.
How fast do the Formula E cars go? In 2002, the Gen3 was introduced, and it is smaller and lighter, which helps them go from their previous 174mph to 200mph. That’s nearly as fast as a Formula 2 car, (and faster than Formula 3, DTM, WRC and V8 Supercars.)
I remember going to the Formula One races in Detroit on Belle Isle, with my young “car-loving son.” It was a thrill. You could save money by buying a general pass instead of a seat in the rafters; and few knew that it meant you could wander around a bit, and sometimes we ended up next to the “pit” of some famous drivers! The excitement was amped up by the noise, and the vibrations, and even the smells. Well, sorry, but the e-cars are just not the same. But, I applaud them for helping to “save the environment…”
