Looking back at first signs of Spring in Lyons (photo spread)

Puffed up in the mid-April snowy days in Lyons – these Western Bluebirds are uncommon in the Lyons area. Keith Gleason said that a group of four arrived on April 15th.
“We seem to be right on the edge of their range, and don’t see them often,” said Keith. “Much more common similar birds are the Mountain Bluebirds and similarly-colored Lazuli Buntings … neither of which have made an appearance yet. Still awaiting the arrival of our first Broadtail Hummer as well. I love to watch the Mountain Bluebirds check out all three houses we built for them trying to decide which one suits them best. Every year it’s the same. And every year I hope for the one in the middle with the best viewing from our kitchen window.”

It’s a great photograph that captures snow falling, but it’s even more exciting to capture THIS MUCH snow FALLING OFF of the tree branches! This was taken in Lyons Labyrinth, just south of downtown off Highway 36, the morning after the April 14th snowfall. If you look at photographer Ben Dunn’s Facebook page, it is filled with photos of him and his family doing really active things, like mountain biking and jumping in Lyons St. Vrain River!
“I really enjoy being outdoors in the beauty of nature,” said Ben Dunn, “and that’s exactly the reason I jumped out of bed with my camera, to take a walk around our lovely little town, and got this shot.”

Robyn Sloan welcomes Daylight Savings Time sunrise at Stone Mountain in Lyons.
How many minutes of daylight increases each day after December 21st? Our daylight hours will begin to grow longer, at first slowly as a matter of seconds, and then by the spring equinox on March 20th it peaks at around three and half minutes per day. —
May 3, 2023 was 13 hours, 53 minutes, and 2 seconds long.
Sunrise is approximately 5:58 a.m. / and sunset is 7:54 p.m.
In the past people have associated the “21st” as the 4 annual ‘equinox’ days, but now, for North Americans, spring began on March 20.

Earth Day – River Clean Up

In honor of Earth Day, there was a RIVER CLEAN UP on Friday, April 21, sponsored by Gateway Realty (Dan Siddall), and one on Sunday, April 23, sponsored by the Town of Lyons. The groups were a bit smaller than in the past, possibly due to the snow storm that happened the day before. In one morning, each group collected several big bags of trash, and some other big odd pieces! Thank you to those great volunteers, who didn’t let a little snow and mud deter them! The riverbanks are looking great.
