NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 3/30/23

If there ever is an emergency in town, or timely news needing to be distributed, you can trust the Lyons Recorder to put it online immediately.
Dear Readers,
As you know, I do a quarterly update on businesses in Lyons, and things seemed to be quite slow this winter season.
I went to the Lyons Chamber of Commerce Social last night, and it was enriching, exciting, enlightening, and fun. Things are hopping behind the scenes. I will do an article next week with some of the news I heard. About a third of the announcements came from Town of Lyons officials. And, one of them was about Summit Housing — and, again — I will get an article together about that news!
Speaking of new construction, the Moss Rock proposed hotel was in the news this week. They have become associated with Marriott hotels, so that they can use the name to help publicize their hotel; and the town is giving them a sort of tax break. I will need to get someone of authority to give us a better breakdown of what this means.
Watch for some of the stores to slowly start to open for more days later in April, as the weather gets more stable, and warmer. Please remember to Support your local businesses, including restaurants and wellness services during the winter doldrums.
from your editor, Kathleen Spring

Weather: More ups and downs in the weather, but in general not meeting the “normal average of 59 degrees.” On Monday, Lyons and Pinewood Springs had 1 to 2 inches of snow, and Longmont had 7 inches — that’s very unusual. AERIAL SPRAYING: per Greg Lowell, Parks and Open Space will not be conducting any aerial herbicide applications until the weed management policy has been updated. — Staff are working on updating policies and procedures and the process will provide opportunities for public input this fall. The Boulder co Commissioners are the final decision makers on adopting policy changes. So they are NOT spraying this year. === Robert Brakenridge added — They ARE very likely spraying this spring at all of the above locations. LYONS ICE SKATING RINK: As you know this closed a month or so ago because there weren’t enough freezing days in a row to keep it frozen and safe. Pat Schroeder died March 13th at the age of 82. Former Colorado U.S. Rep. Pat Schroeder, a pioneer for women’s and family rights in Congress. She refused to join what she called “the good old boys’ club″ and became a feminist icon in the political world. Schroeder was elected to Congress in Colorado in 1972, and was re-elected 11 times. She had a few widely publicized disputes with House Speaker Newt Gingrich. One of her biggest victories was the signing of a family-leave bill in 1993, providing job protection for care of a newborn, a sick child or a parent. She was assertive and the protests and arguments that she pushed could be turned into an exciting movie! There is no one quite like her today. Congrats to Colorado for having voted in someone so strong and righteous.
