Poet’s Corner: Love in a Box

Love in a Box
We all have one,
our version of love.
Learning from others
or movies
or relationships, perhaps.
It sits on the shelf
ready to be brought out
and put away
as people come and go
speaking of Michelangelo.
Then, one day,
unbidden
comes Love.
Not in our control
–indeed.
Changing everything.
Welcome delight.
Welcome surprise.
Welcome glory.
Welcome holiness.
And sometimes,
welcome waves of discontent.
Time to put the box away.
This time, it’s different.
Perhaps,
when it comes to Love,
having control
is overrated after all.

Note to Editor: “My non-binary grandchild really liked it! So amazing when an 86-year-old can share a poem about love with her 18-year-old grandchild.”
