NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 1/12/23

Dear Readers,
Have you done any New Year’s Resolutions? I came across this impactful poem which may give you some beautiful ideas of what to do now that the glow and excitement of Christmas is gone:
“When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among {the people},
To make music in the heart.”
==The Work of Christmas by Howard Thurman==
Howard Thurman (November 18, 1899 – April 10, 1981) was an influential African American theologian and author, philosopher, educator, and civil rights leader; and he wrote more than 20 books.

WEATHER: What a rock and roll week we had… jumping all around. On Tuesday we reached about 60 degrees, and then that night, we had a light snow reach Lyons, but a heavy fog settled throughout the town, pretty much all day, and all along Highway 36 to Pinewood Springs. It was so thick you could barely see a house across the street from you; and it felt like rain on your skin.

All of those sales went to LEAF and their Main Street Fire Relief Fund. FOR “FREEDOM OF THE PRESS” JUNKIES – Open Meetings Act – Freedom of Information NEWS==
The Mississippi Clarion Ledger newspaper recently published a story headlined “State legislature ruled not a public body.” What???? The ruling came in a case in which the Mississippi Free Press asked the state’s Ethics Commission to declare meetings of the Mississippi House Republican Caucus open meetings. The caucus includes 77 of the 122 members of the House, meaning there easily could be more than enough legislators present to conduct official business. In addition, the caucus meets behind closed doors. The Mississippi Constitution states that any time a majority of House members are present and discussing legislative business, that constitutes a quorum. However, the constitution also does not specifically list the Legislature as a public body. The Ethics Commission’s decision is being appealed by the Free Press and the Mississippi Center for Justice.
