Everybody Loves Grace – series to hone reading skills
Description: ‘
This is a story of the ability of Grace, a dog, to love unconditionally and maintain her courage through periods of uncertainty. At the age of four, Grace embarked on a journey from her home on a farm to the city life of Denver, Colorado. The journey, as it is told through Grace’s eyes, is one of adventure and optimism. With her everyday wit and ability to comfort those she meets, this story will find a special place in your heart. Grace sees each day as an opportunity to look deeply into people’s eyes and let them know they are loved. Grace teaches us about…simple acts of kindness… courage to move forward through life’s changes… every day is an adventure.
Background:
Research shows that dogs can help children learn to read and Colorado has its very own testament to that. Grace, a 15-year old Finnish Lapphund, is the star of a new series of children’s books by award-winning Colorado author Katy McQuaid (from Denver & Boulder) that are helping young readers hone their skills.
“Children need to practice a lot when first learning to read,’ author Katy McQuaid said. “And for kids, it can be embarrassing to mess up. But if you’re practicing with a dog, you don’t mind making mistakes.”
A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Davis confirmed that children who read to, or with dogs really do perform better. Young students who read out loud to dogs improved their reading skills by 12 percent over the course of a 10-week program, while children in the same program who didn’t read to dogs showed no improvement.
The author has taken her book and dog to numerous schools in Colorado. The series is designed for children ages 6-10
