Art Trading Cards (monthly activity)

Participants make Art Trading Cards (ATCs), miniature works of art that are 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, the same size as baseball trading cards. Methods include painting, collage, photography, paper-folding, and whatever the imagination suggests. The cards can each be different (eg, 12 versions of different pets smiling), or all be the same original design (eg, one original large painting reduced to ATC size), or be a monthly series of the same theme (eg, “time”).
At their meetings, members bring a dozen ATC and discuss their project of the month. After everyone is done, they trade cards with each other. Everyone goes home with a work of art from everyone else.
Some people have bought albums (from craft stores) that have perfect size slots to put their ATC cards in. ATC are done worldwide. One rule is that the cards are not to be sold; this allows professional artists the freedom to exchange original art ATC without consequences.
Current attendance is about eight to 12 people. The friendly group is always open to more people. The group meets at 12:30p.m. at the Lyons Community Library on the third Saturday of the month. The next one is September 17. You can come and participate by bringing eight to 12 cards, or just bring one sample. We currently are all adults, but youth (with their parents) are welcome to try it out.
To see samples of art cards, visit the Effie Banta meeting room at the Lyons library. There are ATCs on a rack. Visitors may get ideas or do their first trade by bringing in a card and taking one. The effort involved in making the cards can take two hours, or two weeks. They only need to be original works of art by the amateur or professional artists.
