NOTE: We focus on events in Lyons. We add a few special events outside of Lyons, but, in general, do not provide the LINKS, as they are usually big enough to be well-publicized all over the web.
===SEPTEMBER===
September 2, 5 p.m. BBQ and 7 p.m. high school football game. This is a Big Annual Tradition in Lyons! Come out and support the teens, and meet your neighbors! $6 adults, $5 kids. Over 65years free. – get a great bbq hamburger or hotdog meal! (Please be conscientious when parking; watch the signs)
September 3, 5-8 p.m. (food 5:30p.m.) Annual Lyons Pig Roast, at SpiritHound, 4196 Ute Hwy. Lyons. Cuban themed this year, and a new chef. $23 plate. Plus live music.
September 5, Monday – LABOR DAY –– All workers! celebrate” your day”! Take some time for yourself, relax and/or have fun! Your choice! (All government offices will be closed, incl. library and post office) === Denver has it’s annual “Taste of Colorado”…food fest…3-day weekend in Civic Center Park.
September 6 – Town Board of Trustee meeting, delayed one day, due to holiday. — See our “News Briefs and Editor’s Notes” for a description of what is on the Agenda. Incl. a 2nd Reading on the new Gun Ordinance.
September 6 – DEADLINE to complete the survey of what you want the Lyons Creates district to do for the town, ..what you see they’ve done well, and ..what the future should look like. www.LyonsCreates.org
September 9 – 11, daily 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 46th year – Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Festival, 1209 Manford Avenue, next to the Conference building; arena/Field; Join “the clans” for entertainment over three days, including music, highland dancing, a pipping competition, plenty of athletic events, parade, dogs, and more. The largest of its kind in the US.
September 10 – 10:30 – 12noon – Guided Tour of Coffin House at Sandstone Ranch, Longmont == Enjoy a 90-minute guided tour inside and outside – he homesteaded the area in the 1800s-All ages welcome REGISTER: click purple button

September 12, 7:30a.m. to 9:30a.m. BIRD WALK – at Sandstone Ranch, Longmont. Local birding guide Carl Starace guides you around the loop trail to look & listen for local birds that migrate through or call Sandstone Ranch home. September 14, 6:30 p.m. Lyons Library “Art of Negotiating.” The act of negotiating occurs in many aspects of a person’s personal and professional life. This session will expose attendees to the characteristics of a successful negotiation. REGISTER free
September 15 – CEMEX + Boulder County Commissioner meeting to decide on the 15-year lease extension and/or changes. We will post here next week the link for you to use to send a statement or participate via Zoom.
September 16, 17, 18 – Mabon Festival at Planet Bluegrass, Lyons. Emmylou Harris and 9 other extraordinary groups; and old favorites (Big Richard and Lil Smokies) will be performing. TIX at PB or See Tickets. *See this week’s ARTICLE previewing who will be playing*
September 19, 7p.m. – Board of Trustee meeting. open to public
September 21, Lyons Library bi-monthly book club: discussion of Afterlife by Julia Alvarez. REGISTER The library has a dozen books set aside to lend out. (This was the most anticipated book of the year, including Oprah’s Book Club)
September 21, 12-1p.m. Monthly Senior Activity will be picnic in the park! Free lunch buffet and games. Celebrate September Senior BIRTHDAYS. Contact Lisa Ramsey for more information and to REGISTER a spot. LRamsey@townoflyons.com (No meal will be served at the Senior Center)
September 22, Autumn Equinox: The time at which the sun crosses the plane of the equator away from the relevant hemisphere, making day and night of equal length. In the northern hemisphere the date marks the end of summer and beginning of autumn.
September 24 10:30 a.m. to noon, GEOLOGY Tour of Sandstone Ranch, Longmont – Join a volunteer naturalist to explore and learn about the geology of Sandstone Ranch and Boulder County. Free outdoor event, weather permitting; please dress appropriately for walking and the weather. Meet in upper parking lot. Visitor Center-3001 Sandstone Drive-Longmont. September 24 – Rocky Mt National Park: Entrance fee is waived but you still must have obtained a timed entry reservation permit online beforehand.
September 26, Senior Bus Trip to Denver Zoo. REGISTER NOW! This was the #1 favorite bus trip per the survey, and it will fill up fast! Offered thru Town of Lyons Rec Dept.; email LRamsey@townoflyons.com (scholarships available for those who can’t afford the entrance fee). Open to all Lyons seniors age 55 and above, but those 55 to 64 years old pay $20; over 65 is $17.== Enjoy exhibits such as Primate Panorama, Predator Ridge, the Forest Aviary, Bear Mountain, Tropical Discovery, and the Toyota Elephant Exhibit. Visitors of all ages are welcome to ride the Conservation Carousel or the zoo train. The Denver Zoo is big, covering 80 acres, and we will be doing a bit of walking. The zoo does have a few electric vehicles available for rent for those that might need to get around that way. These should be reserved in advance so be sure to let staff know when paying for your trip. The zoo is also wheelchair friendly and the attending town staff person is available and willing to push a wheelchair if needed. We will be there during lunch time and you are welcome to bring a picnic or purchase lunch at one of several on site eateries. There are benches and seating areas scattered throughout the zoo where you can take a break and enjoy your lunch. Seats on the bus are first come first served– so drop off your payment at town hall to reserve your spot today. Location: bus leaves from Walt Self Center, 335 Railroad Ave.
===OCTOBER===
October 1-2, Estes Park Elk Fest & More: This year’s event takes place from Saturday to Sunday, October 1st – 2nd, in Bond Park. The entire two-day festival is free, however, there are admission fees for some special events.
October 1, 9 a.m. – 2p.m. – Paws in the Park, Festival and Walk for Longmont Humane Society.

Lyons (history) Redstone Museum is open 7 days a week: Sunday 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. / and rest of week 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free but donations are welcome! Open June 1 to October 1 (last day is Sunday October 2nd). 303-823-5271.

LYONS ART SHOW – NOW OPEN – July, August, September — Town Hall & Library: 3rd quarter Art Show by LAHC — see ARTICLE 7/21/22 on Daniel Strawn’s solo show at the library, and the public’s art on “Thirst/ Water” is at Town Hall. View them during normal business hours. – Next show is in October, and will feature Commissioner art work. NEXT SHOW opens in October.

Mental Health Partners, Colorado — IN CRISIS? – As of June 2022, they reopened their Crisis Center for walk-ins 24/7 again – 3180 Airport Rd., Boulder (normal resource center: 2935 Baseline)
Lyons Emergency & Assistance Fund has free mental counseling available. Sometimes it is paid for by your insurance company, sometimes Medicaid, or use sliding-scale, or free. contact: mentalwellness@leafLYONS.org
The country-wide CRISIS hotline/emergencies is now in effect: 988 = for Americans in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. (bypass calling 911 or the police)
Lyons now has a co-responder (mental health) who will come out with the Police, if you need help. Ask for one when you call 9-1-1.

Boulder County Aging serves lunch at the Lyons Senior Center (Lyons seniors, ages 60 and up), located in the apartment complex Community Center next to the Post Office. You must call the day before by 1 p.m. to place an order (303) 441-1415. The menu is stated on the phone message. Donation of $3 suggested, or what you can afford.
