NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 7/28/22
Dear Readers,
July 30th is the International Day of Friendship!
Do you take your friends for granted?
Do you consider your friends to be an essential part of your life?
Do you tell your friends how much they mean to you?
Now is the time to STOP and let them know. Use this ‘day’ as an excuse… “Oh, I just saw online that it’s International Day of Friendship. pretty cool, huh? Man, just how long have we been friends? We sure have shared a lot of good times together… yea, and a few downers. But we’re still here, pal. Love ya!”
………Many Thanks, Kathleen Spring, your editor
==NEWS TID BITS==
Weather this past week: More weather in the 90s. On Saturday there was heavy rainfall that brought the temperatures down to the 60s! And, this coming week… today, Thursday, a cool two days around 80, with thunderstorms. ===We are getting ”warnings” that such rains not only strongly affect the “burn scar” areas from the fires with flooding, but our nearby mountain roads – Highway 7 and 36 – often get lots of boulders/rocks on the road. So be aware!
NOTE: Below are two similar sounding LYONS nighttime activities, so make sure you mark them on your calendar clearly:
===National Night Out on Aug. 2, 6 p.m. Boulder County Sheriff Office is hosting four free, family friendly, community events. Join us in Lyons, Niwot, Superior, or the San Lazaro neighborhood. All are welcome. Free food, music, emergency equipment, demonstrations, first responders, etc.– In Lyons it will take place in Bohn Park.
===Lights Out Lyons! August 5, Friday –– includes optional camping under the night stars, and star-gazing activities, music, …too many to list here. Go to this Page to see the flier. Sponsored by Town of Lyons. Timed to be with the Perseids Meteor Shower. You can participate at home or at your business, too, by shutting off lights.
Fundraiser GOLF TOURNAMENT – to SUPPORT LYONS LIONS CLUB charitable efforts – August 1, Lake Valley Golf Club. Contact Lions Club to play, or be one of the great sponsors! Great prizes!! You can sign up online to play. All money raised goes to scholarship and to help those in need get eyeglasses.
PULL A PLANE – yes, you read that right. It’s an event that is raising money for Special Olympics, with great prizes — even winning a truck! Special Olympics Colorado’s annual Plane Pull events are coming up in August (Broomfield) and September (Colorado Springs). www.unifiedraffle.com
CEMEX – Town of Lyons Board of Trustee Special Meeting to discuss the 15 year lease — residents were asked to submit their comments. The BOT took that, and discussed the item a week ago. The Lyons Recorder asked the Mayor earlier this month to make a statement summarizing the meeting discussion points (in an article)… but she has chosen to make a statement on “Lyons Open Discussion /and/ Lyons Happenings” pages on Facebook, and told us to use that to inform the public of their decision (with no BOT discussion/comments provided): She posted: “The Town of Lyons Board of Trustees thanks you for being engaged and providing your input to us. We unanimously agreed NOT to support the Cemex 15 year mining permit extension application. Next, the County Planning Commission will meet on August 17 to determine their recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners. I’ll post more details about how to participate in that meeting as it gets closer.” The Mayor suggests that you go to the Town of Lyons web site to view the video recording of the meeting, if you wish further details. You can write her at HRogin@townoflyons.com
BLOOD DRIVE: Lyons hasn’t had a blood drive in quite a while (maybe due to covid restrictions for crowds?) so you might want to help out and go to the Blood Drive in Allenspark, (with the help of Hilltop Guild):

What to do for SNAKE BITES: The CO wildlife site has details for humans and animals. It’s very detailed, so I’m not going to try and summarize it. Go to SNAKES.
NEW TREES: Thanks to Wildlands Restoration volunteers who planted 20 trees and 15 shrubs as part of the effort to restore the riparian area near 2nd Avenue at the Black Bear Hole. 51 volunteers worked in 90+ degree heat to get these plantings in the ground. SOLAR ENERGY in Lyons — We have done a few reports on this in the Recorder, especially when the Solar Farms were being discussed. But the question always comes up as to whether the town offers rebates or such. The following is a recent posting on Facebook, (and I have confirmed it with a Board member as to being correct==Town of Lyons NEVER offered any subsidy for solar. Eric’s figures are correct.): Eric Janik: The town never had anything to reimburse with. The incentive is the money you’ll save from buying less electricity and a federal income tax credit for a portion of the cost of the project. That credit was 30% until 2019, when it was reduced to 26%. It gets reduced to 22% in 2023, and disappears entirely in 2024.
Reminder: FESTIVAL PARK CLOSURE: Residents are reminded that LaVern Johnson Park will be closed for the 2022 RockyGrass Festival, from Wednesday, July 27 thru noon on August 1. It will also be closed for Folks Festival from Thursday, August 11 thru noon on Monday, August 15 as part of the lease agreement with Planet Bluegrass. === Residents with proof of local address in Lyons (80540) are allowed to walk into the park during the day as part of the lease agreement (such as to walk their dog, or let their kids play on the equipment)
COVID: COLORADO 7-day positivity rate this week remains around 12% (last week 11.94%). Among the 6 top counties for high transmissions was Boulder.
HILLTOP GUILD Annual Fair: While we don’t promote most things happening outside of Lyons, we did want to mention this annual event on behalf of “another small town” here == The annual Hilltop Guild bazaar takes place Saturday, August 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kelley House, 18720 Highway 7. No entrance fee, plenty of free parking. Get there early for the best selection of jellies including the now-famous dandelion jelly that tastes like mountain sunshine. (plus crabapple, chokecherry, rhubar). Many community groups and stores in town will also have tables, selling crafts, jewelry, herbs and more. Crafts include coasters to felt pins, embroidered cotton tea towels to scrubbies – Local weavers’s work – sandwiches – live music. All funds go to scholarships and other charitable projects. Go to www.HilltopGuild.com
RESCHEDULED Band – the band that was rained out on July 5 Concert in Sandstone Park has been rescheduled for August 17. UPDATE: it is not a Celtic band but they do play some Celtic tunes; but not exclusively; some international music. === a mostly locals band: Beth Gadbaw will be joined by Sarah Wong, Sheldon Sands, Mark Anton.
Wildlife REPORT – no new bear news; same old, same old. === Judy Bigger says: A reminder on these Hot Days– please change out your hummingbird feeder(s) daily and put smaller amounts of liquid in each time so that it doesn’t go rancid. If your feeders are in direct sunlight try to relocate them to a shady area. If this is to much work then bring in your feeders and put them back out once the temps start to get cooler. We all want to keep our sweet little friends healthy and happy.
………..you came here and read all these Goodies?! Pass on the Word… tell people what they are missing!

MESSAGE OF CARE: As many of you know, prior to spring 2022, I use to have a “Message of Care” at the end of my news briefs, and suggest the name of a charity that is in current crisis, and needs your help. — I saw on the TV news that 80 horses were sent to the Harmony Equine Center in Franktown; “surrendered” after they were found neglected, sick and injured. The images were the worse I have seen. Not only were they malnourished, but many had injuries, that looked like they were not treated, like a damaged eye (that had to be removed), lameness, infections… They need $175,000 to feed the horses. The addition of 80 more is a costly burden. The horses will spend at least 2-3 months in rehabilitation before they will become available for adoption.
“And we’ll care for these horses no matter what, but it is extremely helpful when our community and folks step up to the plate and even if they can give $20. It’s such a huge help. Because that takes care of two horses for one day,” director Priestly said. Please consider donating to them. The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center is a 168-acre facility. Donations are thru the Dumb Friends League.
