With sadness we announce the passing of LaVern Johnson on Saturday, May 14, 2022
The “Celebration of Life” took place Wednesday, May 26, 2022
LaVern Johnson has been writing Lyons Recorder’s “About Town” social news column every week since October, 1983. Her final column was April 7, 2022.
LaVern became the president of the Lyons Historical Society two years after the group started in 1975, and became the Director of the Lyons Redstone Museum. She and her husband founded Red Rocks Ramblers Square Dance, Lyons, in 1958 to 2019 (with partial seasons after that). She has been on many Town of Lyons committees, the Parks Commission, and a Trustee on the Board of Directors, as well as on campaigns to save things important to a quality life in Lyons. Her family were early farmer pioneers in Lyons; her parents moving here in 1928.

Passing the torch to Kathleen Spring “Editor’s Notes and News Briefs”
Over the years, Kathleen Spring would send tid bits of news to LaVern to put in her column. When the newspaper ownership was taken over by Kathleen, LaVern told her to “Stop sending that stuff to me. You have enough to do your own column. Very little of it will overlap, if any.” And, with that funny encouragement, Kathleen started her own column in September 2020, called “Editor’s Notes and News Briefs” which summarizes activities in town, news about Lyons people and businesses and schools, and a small handful of major US headlines, just to give the timeline some connection as to what was going on in the world when Lyons was “making local news.”
Please try out her column, either by clicking on it on the HOME Page (front page), and choosing the NEWS article in the right hand box, or by clicking on this general link, which will take you to all the weekly columns.
