NEWS Briefs & NOTES from your editor, 5/26/22

There will be no “Editor’s Notes, and News Briefs” for a few weeks. I have had a series of personal issues affecting my life that need to be taken care of…………Kathleen
HISTORY OF THE LYONS RECORDER SOCIAL COLUMNS:
LaVern Johnson took over the social column in the Lyons Recorder 38 years ago. She has never missed an issue. Her last one was April 7, 2022. It was one of the most read columns in the newspaper.
I edited and published LaVern Johnson’s “About Town” column over the past couple of years. I sorted it out into “categories,” such as “School,” “Businesses,” “Town Meetings.” She was very diligent in putting it out every week — for a few months, the newspaper was in transition and not being published — in which case, we worked it out so that I published her column on Facebook.
Over the past several years, I would send LaVern things to put in it, and she often said “where’d you get that? Do you own column, so we don’t miss it,” and so now that I’m editor of the newspaper, I am doing my own column.
It turned out there was enough news for two columns, with only the tiniest bit of overlapping, and both were equally read!
After taking over the newspaper these past couple of years, I found myself with pen and paper in hand all day long, picking up tid bits of news for the newspaper. But this month of June, I need to step back and collect myself… and revert back to being a “museum person,” and sort out the projects that LaVern and I had planned to do, …and address how to deal with some of my closest friends becoming significantly more ill this past month.
With regard to pausing my “EDITORS NOTES/ NEWS BRIEFS” (which you are now reading)— There are no urgent matters right now for me to report on — COVID is not as treacherous, and businesses are not shut down, and masks aren’t mandatory — Town Hall meetings have been pretty quiet; nothing major happening (other than discussions on future plans to work on “infrastructure”) — And, I’ve already recently done an extensive wrap up of the construction projects currently happening — No major business news (I’ll have a separate article on three openings next week) — Schools are getting out (I’ll have a separate article on the graduation) —
So you can see, I can and will still do articles that keep you informed on the major things happening in town. But I will not be doing deep or investigative articles (or collecting daily Lyons “chatter and tid bits”). We still have the normal number of articles this week and next week.
My “THINGS TO DO” / is now “THINGS HAPPENING in TOWN”, and you will find a full list of all activities, programs, events, concerts, etc. — it is expanded slightly with things that I might have previously put in my “NEWS BRIEFS”.
So, you will still be getting the essential news. But no “personal comments” and “general tid bit news” from me for now.
……………………….thanks for your support, and readership, Kathleen
