Spirit Hound Distillers wins two awards
Spirit Hound Distillers won two awards at the London: Best in Show for US Spirits /and/ Whisky of the Year! Congratulations! It received the highest quality rating of any US-based spirit in the competition.
“Well, the results are in and we couldn’t be more pleased – our Bottled in Bond Malt whisky is WHISKY OF THE YEAR according to the London Competitions! It received a 96 rating, the third highest in the entire competition. Our barrel-finished gin and rye received a silver and bronze, respectively.” said Spirit Hound representative.
Whisky of the Year from the London International Spirits Competition (designation):
Barrel #138 was a Malt Whisky Bottled in Bond Expression; this is a designation that is unique to the United States and was developed pre-Prohibition (1897) as a consumer protection act. It states that whisky must be distilled and bottled by the same company, that it must be aged in a US bonded warehouse, has been aged for at least 4 years in a barrel, and is bottled at exactly 100 proof (among other regulations). Spirit Hound’s Bottled in Bond malt whisky was entered as a Single Malt Whisky in the London Spirits Competition, which it most closely matches in regulations (UK single malts must be distilled at one location, aged at least 3 years, and consist of 100% barley). Therefore it won a gold medal in the Single Malt Category, as well as Best in Show for U.S. spirits, AND Whisky of the Year! We’re incredibly proud that it took 3 awards!
Spirit Hound’s Straight Malt Whisky is made with all-Colorado ingredients and distilled the ‘Spirit Hound way’ on two stills designed and built by hand by Founder and Head Distiller Craig Engelhorn in Lyons, Colo. The Straight Malt Whisky features an all-malt recipe made with Colorado-grown malted barley and a dash of peat-smoked malt barley, all grown and malted in small batches by the Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa, Colorado. Aged for more than 2 years in new, fully charred American oak barrels before being bottled in an unblended, single-barrel fashion, Spirit Hound’s Straight Malt Whisky features aromas of oak, toffee, caramel, turbinado sugar, light smoke, and a silky body.
The 2022 Competition saw 160 from the United States, 447 entries from the United Kingdom as the top entrant country, followed by 323 products from Australia. 771 Gins made Gin the top category entrant followed by Whiskey and Rum.
==== There are no more bottles of that particular barrel available in the tasting room (it sold very quickly once the news came out), but they have their classic 90 proof, single barrel Straight Malt Whisky available all the time. They also are releasing a RYE Bottled in Bond on World Whisky Day – May 21st. ==== Since its launch in 2012, Spirit Hound’s reputation originates in a hands-on approach to the craft of distilling. Co-founders Craig Engelhorn, Matt Rooney and Neil Sullivan and the Spirit Hound team take traditional and classic recipes that come to life with local, hand-selected ingredients distilled through hand-built-from-scratch stills and distillation equipment in search of one-of-a-kind processes and flavors.
