ABOUT TOWN 12/9/2021 #88 for the Lyons Recorder online
However, it is now snowing at Vail and the mountains..So glad! We missed the Fireworks, but understand because of the fire danger..Pray for Snow!!
The Christmas Bazaar was busy and with 60 vendors. We hope none of them get the Virus. There was a big variety of Christmas gifts..The school Choir served the chili lunch., held at the Lyons Elementary Gym, Sat & Sunday followed by the fantastic parade, with a lot of floats, some said 40! Bringing Lyons the beginning of the Christmas Holiday.

All went well. However, we have some candy left..call 303-823 5925 and pick it up at 238 High or we”ll deliver. Geneva, our “door prize tickets saleslady” fell and dislocated her shoulder. GRAFITTI: A Company had to be hired to get the Grafitti off things at Bohn Park, that is Sad, and when you get caught yo u will be paying for the expense. Kids, please have enough respect for yourselves in not getting a record during school. They check that when you start applying to go to College and asking for Scholarships. This record stays with you forever..It seems fun to you, but will BITE YOU as you graduate and beyond. This is the time you should turn yourselves in..that will give you some good points!
QUESTION: Does someone of the school board go talk to the kids about the hazards of getting a
record and the repercussions??
BINGO: Volunteers are needed for Bingo each Sunday, at Bingo Alley in Longmont, from 1-3pm..The Booster Cub raises $80,000 for school tings they need, so help them out..Very Important.

**HISTORY OF LYONS SCHOOLS**
THE MIDDLESENIOR AUDITORIUM: At long last, the Auditorium at Lyons Middle Senior High is built and opened to the public for its first Band Concert on Wednesday ,Dec. 8th, and on Monday, Dec. 13th, and etc. . Through the years of fighting for our MiddleSr High School, 1948-1970; The new gym and restrooms at the then High School was built in 1958 (now Lyons Elementary Gym) , The new MS High was built in 1974; and as the years went by every High School in he School District had an auditorium except Lyons. After continued years of the Lyons School Committee attending the school board meetings asking for an Auditorium for Lyons, the 2016 Bond Vote, and passed, now built..Thanks to all. every school got an Auditorium except Lyons..Each meeting we went to we asked for an Auditorium, but were always turned down until 2016, when the money for the Auditorium was put in the Ballot, and it won! We do thank the School Committee, who fought to save our Middle|Sr High from being bussed to Longmont, who attended meetings, whose kids hoofed around Lyons, Longmont, Frederick, Firestone, putting out fliers to vote for the small schools-Lyons, Mead, Fredrick, Erie, Skyline, Niwot , and as they were built got an auditorium.. When our new HS started we had a big Celebration, and when it was finished in 1974 a three-day Celebration..as we had fought long and hard. We attribute our Thanks to all those who helped fight for our school ,now our Auditorium. It is so gratifying to have the new school here, to save the town, to save those interested in both academics and sports, those interested in a small school. It was indeed music to our ears, when one night at a Concert, Karen Gregg announced that she had vouched for Auditorium . Thru the years, the Lyons PTO was leading the battle, such as Tom Sherwood and Ada Peila, Then Dana Crumb moved to town and got on the School Board, followed by E. C. Carter, who moved from Allenspark to Lyons to help, and followed by Henri Kinson. It helped when School Board Members were elected that were for small schools.. school district were replaced, We had Dana Crumb, and Henri Kinson, who got on the school board to save our schools, As the years, go by people will not know how our schools got here, but let me say, IT WAS A LONG STRUGGLE, FROM 1947 TO 1974-ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO. WHEN THE SCHOOL WAS FINALLY BUILT..OUR THANKS TO ALL!

HISTORY OF THE LYONS DEPOT:
The Lyons Depot was built in 1894 with the Railroad to haul the Lyons sandstone throughout the United States; It was used until 1960, when trucks hauled the stone; it was in wreck and ruin; in fact we held a garage sale there in 1972; It was owned by an individual who was about to sell it and move it block by block to Colorado Springs; The Town bought it, and Bertha Ramey, the Savior, provided the last $500 to pay $5500.00 for it. Vaughn Carter was Mayor at the time. The Lyons Historical Society was formed to “save the depot” needing a tax-exempt status – Dorothy Paxton was President, Helen Kiessling, Mary & Don Colard, LaVern Johnson, and many more can be credited with saving it. It was on State Highway land and Railroad Land with a lawsuit over it being sold. It was restored for the Town Library by Jim Emerson and son, Pete and others, with a grant from the State Historical Society. It was used as a Library, crammed with books, until after the 2013 flood. Many books were wet and ruined. Mark Browning, new to town, took on the big job of moving the books. The Library then went to Main Street, and a vote for a Library District, failed at first; then thanks to Mark, it passed. Ellen Hine and Ann Trementozzi were the first librarians (in the Depot building).
GRANT/TAXES: The building was in very poor shape and was restored by a Grant from the State Historical Society with new roof, pointing of stone, etc. Part of the building is an old baggage car, which was used by Jim & Doris Gouge as a refreshment stand. It was dedicated to the town for a library annex in honor of their son, Jim, who died in an accident, while diving off a cliff.
It became the Lyons Regional Library, with a Property Tax of 5.6%; which pays for the Bond for the buildings as well as the Operations. We are very fortunate to have such a great library
However, now the building is vacant, with ideas for its use welcome. Contact Town of Lyons, Box 49, Lyons,Co. 80540
