BOOKS: 5 lists of recommended books to browse for holiday giving
Publisher’s Weekly, Top 10
This is a link to the top ten best selling books =this week=. (You will not be able to see the top 100 or other statistics without first becoming a member.)
Can you believe “Diary of a Whimpy Kid” volume #16!! is on the list. Also, biographies and thrillers are always on the list: this week it’s Will Smith’s biography, and yet another John Grisham novel. The sentimental writers are back with a new book by Mitch Albom and by Nicholas Sparks, reliable gift books. And, J. K. Rowling (Harry Potter) is still alive and kicking, with a new book called “The Christmas Pig.” There’s also a cookbook by the Pioneer Woman, and a couple of deep history books. Quite a nice, varied selection!
NPR’s Top 360 Books, sorted in categories
Books We Love (formerly known as NPR’s Book Concierge) is back with a new name and 360+ new books handpicked just for you by NPR staff and trusted critics.
What I like about this list is that it is sorted by USEFUL and unique categories, like “Seriously Great Writing,” and “Rather Short”… AND you can combine categories! (let’s try: short and serious)
Best Selling Book the Year you were born
Stacker used data from Publisher’s Weekly to compile a list of the most popular novel in America each year since 1920. Ranging from Steinbeck classics to modern hits, browse this list for a look into what was popular the year you were born—you might even find your next favorite. (I advise you to use your search bar to find your year, as it’s a long list.)
Carnegie nominees
And, for those serious book readers on your gift giving list:
On November 8th, the American Library Association (ALA) announced the six books shortlisted for the esteemed Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awarded for the previous year’s best fiction and nonfiction books written for adult readers and published in the United States. More information on the finalists and the awards can be found at www.ala.org/carnegieadult.
The winners (one for fiction, one for nonfiction) are announced each January and receive a $5,000 cash award.
Authors list their favorite book gifts
With the holidays right around the corner and the looming supply chain issues, we thought it might be time to pull together a bookish gift guide. And who better to advise you on the best books to present to loved ones than some of our favorite writers? From poetry collections and illustrated novels to guides for young writers and classic works in translation, there’s surely something for everyone here. (Lit Hub, best of literary on the web) You may be surprised– Dave Eggers recommends: The Mueller Report.
