Lyons’ Main Street and LaVern Johnson Park were packed with revelers Saturday night, October 30th. It was estimated that 500 participated in Lyons Spooktacular! There were as many adults in costumes on Main Street as there were kids. Most of them proceeded to the Rave to the Grave party; which was made doubly memorable by Kahlie Sue Pinello, who designed and made the amazing, unique costumes for the CatWalk.
Some kids also trick or treated on the official Halloween night, Sunday, October 31st, but it was close to 40 degrees, so they did not last long into the night. One mom said she ran out of candy, and a trio of teens grabbed a handful out of their bags, and put it in her box to share! There were several dogs dressed up, and Lyons Veterinary gave them doggie treats (see their contest winner below).
The festivities started out in the late afternoon at the Lyons Elementary School, where kids could participate in fun games. Some also painted pumpkins at Gateway Realty, on Main St. Next, town folks lined up in the school parking lot; and, at 6 p.m., headed on over to Main Street, then turned the corner and walked down High Street. The Lyons High School Band started the procession off. After a half hour parade procession, families started going door-to-door at business store fronts, begging for treats. At 7 p.m., the police removed the blockades and traffic was allowed down Main Street, High Street, and Broadway again.
Next people moved to LaVern Johnson Park for Lyons Emergency & Assistance Fund’s fundraiser, Rave to the Grave. There was a line to get in, and people continue to wander in throughout the night. Some estimates gave the crowd size at 800. A $20 donation was requested, and some registered early for the $100 VIP treatment. (UPDATE: Rave to the Grave: Out Of This World Galactic Dance Party raised $27,686.57! and had 861 attendees)
The party began with a half hour Cat Walk, created and coordinated by Kahlie Sue Pinello, on the big stage. The park was aglow with bright colored lights, and powerful spot lights that shined against the surrounding mountains. Arthur Lee Land and Dechan Hawk lead the live-music performance, with people swaying or dancing, and keeping the brisk 40 degree night away. The celebration ended with people disappearing into the darkness.
