Another week gone by…We had several days hot days; however the nights are cooler, which is good..However, No Rain; and we do need rain..not heavy! 9/2/21

FLOOD MEMORIAL AND RECOVERY is schedule for Friday night, Sept 10th, at 6pm, at LaVern Johnson Park with a potluck dinner. Bring a snack/dish-to-share, and a beverage, and join us in reminiscing the flood, September 11-18, 2013, the damage and recovery. All invited at first shelter “Quarry Shelter”
The St. Vrain Valley Pioneer Association will hold their annual Potluck and meeting on Sept. 16th, at 12:45am, at the Hygiene Methodist Hall. All Pioneers of the St. Vrain Valley that came before 1880’s are urged to attend. But this year, non-pioneer guests are also invited.
THE LYONS ELEMENTARY JOG-A-THON will be held on September 24th..Be sure to support this Fundraiser, which raises funds for school supplies, trips etc. Send to Box 684, Lyons Co. 80540 Or contact the PTO. Sign up online. Add a kid’s name if you know one, but not necessary.
THE WATERSHED FESTIVAL held in Meadow\LaVern’s Park was very successful and informative; with booths on the area’s Watershed health and recovery through events that support water education, outreach, and innovation. Included was music, dancing, games, freebies, free snow cones with hands-on experiences to raise the awareness and provide connections about the health and recovery of watersheds and forests in Colorado.; Lyons area booths were by the Lyons Elementary School, Lyons Ecology Board, Lyons M\Sr High, with booths from St.Vrain and Left Hand Water District, and many more. Volunteers are always welcome. During the flood this group to Lyons many months to help out on our Watershed.
The Hootenanny by the Lyons Community Foundation and also for the benefit of LEAF, at River Bend last Sunday, was a huge success, with a duck race, music, food, and loads of wonderful items for the silent auction that took in loads of money. This money is mostly designated for LEAF, which is the Lyons Emergency Fund, for food, housing, clothing, medical metal, etc., as well as scholarships, grants to the Lyons Recreation Dept for the Concerts in the Park, Parade of Lights, and etc., as well as non-profit organizations such as the Lyons Historical Society (quarry display, 40 displays for 40 years, etc.) THANK YOU LCF..
HIGHWAY #7 -the repair of the lower South St. Vrain Canyon, which will be closed except during early morning and evenings for about a year (mid-September to Memorial Day)

LYONS HISTORIC DISTRICT. We have 15 sandstone buildings as a Historic District; the Lyons Redstone Museum (1881 schoolhouse) is the depository of Lyons area history (open daily June 1st, so Stop By). REMEMBER THE HISTORY OF LYONS, COLORADO and be proud of our Home Town!

My great great great grandfather was Charles Bradford. I am currently in Lyons doing research. His daughter Maud was my great grandmother. We called her Honey. She married John Montgomery. Their daughter Lucille was born in 1912 in Lyons. I have many beautiful poems written by Maud.

Z TRIP VOUCHER PROGRAM- To help those “in need” of transportation” == NEW DETAILS: z-Trip vouchers are good any day of the week from 5 am to 7 pm. It is a year round program. Each ride must start or end in Lyons. Vouchers are good for travel to/from Boulder and Longmont but not between the two. The Town is aware that some people are trying to cheat on the vouchers; don’t ruin it for everybody; be honest.

2021 RESIDENT PARKING PASS. The annual parking pass is valid January 1 – Dec 31. The parking passes are available to residents of Lyons (Utility billing customers only); one free resident parking pass per household; a second pass may be obtained for $40, and three or more $55.00 each. Golf carts are considered vehicles and the one free parking pass may be used for a golf cart. === NON-Lyons residents may purchase a season parking pass for $80.00 per vehicle. === The parking fee for 2021 is $2 per hour on weekdays and off season weekends, and $3 per hour on peak season weekends. Parking fees must be paid at the kiosks located throughout the park with a receipt to placed on the windshield. Longmont is asking for Lyons and Firestone to join their Brownsfield Project with up to $600,000 in grants for town improvement.
A new grant from DOLA is available to businesses
The town will still pick up your limbs, if in a neat pile at your lot.
TEBO is asking for annexation of his property at the Boulder Junction, formerly Gwynne’s . Greenhouse and surrounding area.
Discussion will continue on the solar garden and battery storage. If on Park property there has to be a vote of the people;A letter from Jim & Kathy Carroll stated they did not object on the Solar Storage being east of their property;
ADU’s in town are encouraged. See the Building inspector, if you would like to change your
outbuilding into living quarters. Eleven ADU’s have been approved by the town the past year;
On the McCain property to the east of the Town Hall, and to the South of the Library; McCain is asking for a change of zoning from Commercial to Industrial; The vote was held up to hear from the neighbors.
The town has approved submitting for a Federal Economic Development Grant
Discussion will continue on whether or not to accept the $2 million grant to put a trail from Lyons to the Foothills Junction, where the have to get the approval of Clark’s Hardware, three ditches, and Left Hand Water Co. It will cost the town $66,600 for the grant. They are waiting to get the “word” from the others.

LYONS PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
LYONS PARKS & RECREATION will meet Monday, Sept. 13th, at 6pm, on zoom.
Topics to be discussed are: The agreement between the town and Martin Acres has presented to the Board..emphasizing low parking at 2nd Avenue near Bohn Park, and walking to the land, helping with low impact on Road 69. The commission suggests a loop trail and passive recreation..
b. Lyons Valley River Park is being completed.with stream bank stabilization.;
c.The 2nd Avenue Bridge is finished and they will discuss the hazards of 2nd Avenue and the slope on the bridge, which makes blind spots if someone is below the slope and the driver can’t seem them, The Commission is recommending to the Town Board – 4 way stops, “slow” speed signs to avoid a tragedy.
d.The 4th Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Design is upcoming and out for Bid. (The bridge will be paid for thru Safe Schools grant is scheduled to start this fall and be finished in 2022.
Other topics were:
a.They announce that Bohn Park Phase 2 is completed, and are having ballgames.e. .The Town has agreed to two grants for the St. Vrain Trail east of town. The town leases the land at the back to: of Blue Mountain Stone, Spirit Hounds, and Clark’s Hardware the trail has to go thru, as well as over 3 or 4 ditches-the town met with Highland Ditch Co. this week and are trying to come to an agreement with the Ditch companies as well as the Northern Colorado.Water District.The grants for this Trail amount to $2 million and will be an advantage to all..the businesses on the Eastern corridor; bikers, and hikers to get off the highway and to safety; and will meet with St. Vrain Greenway Trail coming west from Longmont.; The town will pay the matching funds of 12% and 13% if all agreements can be made. The amount of the grant is $2 million.

Ray, at the concession stand at LaVern Johnson Park asked that the month of August be deleted from his lease payment, due to high water and river closures.affecting his business.
Discussion was held on creating a park for small dogs, who will have their pond, water, shelter, and be fenced off, so dogs and owners will be safe from the big dogs.
The 10 acres south of the Dog Park may be used for bike trails, with a practice loop for skills, with a proposal for the area, with a side trail at the south 10 acres for a 6 foot wide trail half way to Ledge Ditch;
The installation of the Water Rescue units is pending.
Walsh Construction has finished the storage area for softball and baseball..
The Ponds water quality proposals for Aeration or nanobubble technology are being reviewed, with an estimated cost of $42,000;
DUE TO COVID THE 2021 Lyons GOOD OLD DAYS was not budgeted for;
LaVern asked that the Lyons Good Old Day be set for Saturday, June 25,2022, and asked for money in the budget. The High School Classes of the 0’s; 1’s; and 2’s, Mr. and Mrs. Good Old Day, and the 2022 graduates of pioneer families will be honored.
And declare it the 4th Saturday-June 25th, 2022. so they can contact the Lyons alumni. as there are three classes, 1970, 1971, and 1972 who need to celebrate their 50th year
TRASH IN PARKS: Everyone is asked to take a trash bag with you when you go into the Parks and pickup over the busy weekends.

In 2020, Although the Museum had to stay closed all last season, the Class of 1969 sponsored a sandstone Bench in honor of Mickey Hawkins, at the Museum, honoring the 50 years since his death; and the paving of the driveway with a sandstone Plaque; stating “Driveway by Western Stone and Roberts Landscaping Corp”. besides $8800 from COVID grants that helped us pay our bills. Tanya Baty and family have returned from a trip to Europe, taking their daughter, Morgane to College to Amsterdam and visiting Belgium, Luxenberg, and France where they are from.
HISTORY: it is sad to have that Soda fountain be taken out-of-town; however, there seemed to be place for it. It has been in the Lyons Drug store since it was built on the corner of 4th & Main since 1921. Us kids 1933-up all stopped by after school. were school from 1st thru 12th were held, for an ice cream; After the fire in 1967, it was moved to the west to a restaurant, and has served Lyons 100 years) A piece of Lyons’ past gone but not forgotten. (We should have held a Farewell Party for the Soda Fountain!)
Arielle Hodgson has received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and has gone to “seek her fortune”. Arielle has been here (at Town Hall) since just before the flood, doing mostly the town e-mail and news.,.We will miss her.
Nora Hayden is attending the Guilford Academy in North Carolina..the 3rd largest college in the State, with a big tech school..
Shaelie Harman has returned to her college in Iowa, where she is a senior., and will get a Nursing degree.

OBITUARY OF JAMES FRANKLEN McCAIN
James McCain was born in Longmont, Co. on August 23, 2921 and died in Carver, Massachusetts, August 24, 2012..at 100 years old.
He was a 1941 graduate of Lyons High School.He was a master carpenter, furniture and cabinet maker. He served in the US Navy and was in the European Theater as well as the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged as a Chief Machinist mate. He married his wife Ester Drisdale in Boston Mass, during his military service They have one daughter, Charlotte McCain of Carver, Mass. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, father, James Fraklen McCain and mother Lucy Ann McCain, brothers, Leonard H. McCain, Richard A. McCain and Merle L. McCain. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte of Carver Mass; a sister, Margaret McCain Billings of Lyons, Co.; two brothers, Dean R McCain of Arvada and Gene E McCain of Lyons, Co, also numerous nephews and nieces,.
Internment has been completed in Carver. Mass.
