Kids from 2 to 102 will enjoy this wonderland created by Steve and Anne Haskew, Lyons. Ann says that when they got married 50 plus years ago, that she didn’t know she would become a model railroad enthusiast. Steve slowly expanded the layout, initially in their apartment, to their home basement, and then into their back yard. It now extends the length of their home, approximately 30 feet or more, and into the woods. He still dreams of expanding it, and Anne replies, “Well, it will depend on how much time you want to spent cleaning the tracks outside.”
It is called the Silverton Northern Railroad after a real mining town train.
“He builds a lot of his own buildings from scratch, and sometimes he takes plastic kits and turns them into old wooden buildings,” said Anne.
The particular layout that they are exhibiting took them about 20 years to do. It appears to be on the side of a hill and can be described as “outdoorsy” (per Anne). The basement one is the same scale “G” so that cars can run on either track. They call it their Garden Railroad because it has live trees and ground cover, and even a waterfall. They sometimes have wildlife come by and drink out of the pond. The trees are trimmed back so that they look smaller and fit in with the theme.
“Model railroaders never quit,” said Anne. “It’s like it’s never finished.” They hope to offer the open house again in the fall.
Trains will be running Saturday, July 3rd, 9a.m. to 4p.m. and Sunday July 4th, 1p.m. to 4p.m. Free.
From Lyons, take HWY 36 toward Estes Park. At CR71 (at the Apple Valley bridge), follow the yellow signs to the house.
