May: Lyme & Tick Awareness Month

Colorado Governor, Jared Polis, has signed a proclamation for Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Disease Awareness Month for May, 2021.
In this era of COVID-19, prevention and recognition of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases/conditions is even more critical. As the distribution and prevalence of ticks and tick-borne diseases continues to increase at a national level…so must awareness.
Though Colorado is widely considered a “low incidence” state, we are home to a growing number of people that have been infected by Lyme and/or other tick-borne diseases here in Colorado, and from travel throughout the United States and the world. Human Lyme cases reported to the CDC in 2019 for Colorado were an all time high and a growing number of patients are living with debilitating symptoms and chronic disease. (NOTE, ticks have been seen in Estes Park area, Wild Basin, and the Rocky Mt. National Park already this month, as well as other open field areas, where deer are seen, around Lyons)
People, pets, and livestock and wildlife are all susceptible to many of the infections that can be acquired through the bite of a tick. The sooner a tick-borne disease is diagnosed and properly treated, the better the outcome for the patient. COVID-19 may complicate symptoms, diagnosis and access to care even more. Awareness of these diseases needs to increase faster than the spread of the diseases.
