What is a physical therapist

What is a Physical Therapist (PT)
PT’s are healthcare professionals that assist in restoring normal movement patterns. Their extensive education of the human body allows them to diagnose, treat, rehab and prevent injuries whether they occur from the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and/or pulmonary systems. No other health professional has their educational background. This is why you will find a Physical Therapist in every medical sector (hospitals, rehab facilities, senior centers), school systems, collegiate and professional sports teams and in the community.
When the body is healthy and pain free, it moves effortlessly and with minimal energy expenditure. Pain, injury, illness and repetitive movements are all causes for altered movement patterns and decreased function.
When should I call a physical therapist?
Physical therapy can restore normal function in any affected area of the body. If there is any decreased ability in doing what you love, physical therapy can be the best place to start. PT’s are movement specialist. Not only can they help relieve pain, they provide treatment giving you long term benefits to live your optimal life.
Do I need a doctor’s referral, or will my insurance cover physical therapy?
With Colorado being an open access state, you are not required to have a doctor’s referral. This makes it so much more obtainable to take the step towards Physical therapy. Medicare and Medicaid are the two insurances that will need to have a doctor’s referral for physical therapy.
