COVID-1 YEAR: It as certainly been a long year, of staying in, washing our hands, wearing a mask, social distancing from COVID…However, we didn’t catch the virus and now have had or are getting the shots. All the things we missed out on: school concerts, graduation, high street concerts, town meetings, senior meals and meetings in Senior Center, etc. etc. 68 in Lyons has gotten the COVID..Some in the hospital twice, some many days, some not feeling good yet. We can declare ourselves lucky we didn’t get it, but still have to wear masks and be careful..It is still around. However, it is down from 300 cases in Boulder County a day to 19 today, and Boulder County is now in the Yellow level., and there are declining hospitalizations. There is Hope!

Another week gone by in this New Year of 2021. We are supposed to get a lot of snow the next day or two! We need it, but some don’t like it. You can’t control Mother Nature. Leave the water run if it gets cold again.

ICE RINK: Due to the warm weather and the sun melting the ice at the skate rink, the rink had to close for the season. Too bad..The rink was popular..thanks those who made it possible.

THIS SPRING BRINGS: Skateboarding at the new skatepark, Mountain biking at the dirt bike park and on local trails, and ongoing fitness classes at Lavern Johnson Park, are part of the action this spring. Summer camp is available; Seniors have Wednesday walk. Go to: Lyons Recreation Department.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS STARTS NEXT Saturday night, March 13th, at 2 a.m.

WORK FOR LYONS STUDENTS- Ages 14-17 are invited to work for Boulder County Youth Corps this summer, starting, June 14th with $12.32 an hour. The students will make trails, do maintenance, pull weeds, fencing, etc. There are also jobs for Team Leaders, and Assistants. go to boco.org.Boulder

2021 RESIDENT PARKING PASS. The parking passes are available to residents of Lyons (Utility billing customers only); one free resident parking pass per household; a second pass may be obtained for $40, and three or more $55.00 each. Golf cards are considered vehicles and the one free parking pass may be used for a golf cart.

Lyons residents may purchase a season parking pass for $80.00 per vehicle. The parking fee for 2021 is $1 per house on weekdays and off season weekends, and $3 per hour on peak season weekends. Parking fees can be paid at the kiosks located throughout the park with a receipt to placed on the windshield. Parking fees are enforced. ITS THE LAW: Keep sidewalks accessible for everyone. Snow and ice make traversing sidewalks difficult and dangerous. This is the law. Residents must remove snow or ice 24 hours after the last accumulation. If sidewalks remains hazardous the town may mitigate and charges will be sent to the property owners.

NEED ASSISTANCE: Lyons volunteers may assist those who need help shoveling their sidewalks. at www.lyonsvolunteers.org

Berlin after the war when the Americans, Germans, and Russians each had a part of Germany. going to Colombia to live, and coming to America operating the Black Bear Inn in Lyons from 1988-1999. They sold the Black Bear Inn to Hans & Analais Wyppler from Austria; operated a restaurant in Longmont; then back to Germany, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; Georg just passing away, and a few pages left. LYONS HISTORIC ARTIFACTS: Question: Todd Jacobson has a Historic picture of a schoolhouse south of his place at the end of Apple Valley Road, which he understands was moved to Colard’s with school held there many years. CONTEST: Join Can’d Aid and Ball Corporation’s CAN CANpaign with your artwork to be featured on Can’d Aid’ emergency water cans. Artists of all ages and skill levels are invite to apply. Free COVID TESTING will continue to be offered on Fridays from 1:30-3:00 at Latter Day Saints Church, 2nd Avenue, Lyons, Co, Holidays. Many Lyons folks are getting tested, around 175 each Friday. Hundreds of people throughout the State are being tested, to be sure they don’t give it to their family. (This gives assurance if you have the Virus infection you can be more careful with those near you; A lot of people have the infection and don’t know it, thus it spreads.. “Staying in” seems to be the answer.)

VACCINE: The town was able to give 42 shots last Friday at the Senior Center; You had to be registered. Get your name in, they may come again! Lyons folks have had to go to Ft. Collins, Westminister, Estes Park, etc for their shots..it is nice when they are in Lyons-saves time and money!

VACCINE: Many folks are receiving shots of vaccine daily even driving to Fort Collins and Denver; 42,000 Senior have had their first shot; with responders, hospitals; those from 65-69 next.. TOWN ANNUAL REPORT: Look on the town web or pickup one of the 10 copies of the Annual Report, telling the accomplishments of the Town in the Year 2020. Interesting.

The Town provides a place for Recycling and Compost Collection Garden in a Box– Includes 14-30 starter plants for each garden. Prices range from $111 to $l6l depending on the number of plants and square feet. The gardens go on sale March 1 and will be available at mid-May.

COVID-19 NEWS

VACCINE notifications program begins with sign ups to be notified when they are able to receive the vaccine (bit.ly/3nu2ybi); The vaccine will provide 300,000 county residents over 70 years old or older as well as teachers, grocery store employees and other frontline workers.

COVID REPORT:===========

COVID-Today-March 9th there are 21 new cases, no deaths; four new hospitalizations ; a total of 19,2333 cases in the county and 591 currently hospitalized The number of deaths remains at 246; the county’s seven day hospitalizations brings the county’s total cases is 19.233; Boulder County reports that 28,644 residents have received the vaccine with 37,718 fully vaccinated. A total of 66,362 doses have been given in Boulder County. 5 new cases have been reported in Boulder School district with 21 active cases in the St. Vrain Valley District. 67 cases have been reported in Lyons; cases in Colorado, over 18,538 cases in Boulder County; over 862 cases at CU; Out of Colorado’s 5.7 million people 2,581,262 people have been tested. Gov. Polis now has allowed more leniency if restaurants follow regulations. He has declared no clusters of groups, and has allowed 2 to be together at CU with the new order of “Stay Home”. The rate of infection 6752% over per 100,000 in Boulder; over 6850% per 100,000 in Longmont; over 5212% in Louisville with over 5121% in Lafayette; 2836% rate per 100,000 in Superior; in Lyons the rate is over 3273%; in Erie, the rate is over 3948%; in Nederland, the rate is1623%; in unincorporated Boulder County is 3730% Statewide there are 437.839 cases with 6022 deaths, with 23,909 hospitalized . Out of Colorado’s 5.7 million population, 2,619,721 people have been tested.

GIRLS BASKETBALL is coached by Marcus Richardson,with three seniors returning who have all started the last two or three seasons. which includes forward Hannah Schweiger, Avery Joy and senior point guard Jazzmyn Enny. They did not qualify to go to State playoffs.

The District Basketball playoffs are this weekend, with semifinals March 16th and the State Championships at the Broadmoor World Arena on March 19 & 20th. Good Luck Teams.

WRESTLING School-Wide Send Off for State Wrestling, Thursday, March 11th, @ 2:15pm; Friday, March 12th-Away Matches: 2A State Wrestling @ Southwest Motors Event Center on the Colorado State Fairground Campus in Pueblo, Co. Going to State are: Orin Huff, David Gardner, and Christian Keller. Lyons wrestling program had seven returning state qualifiers hungry for a team title, with Senior Oran Huff going for individual state title No. 3 said: Lions coach Brandon Lohr expects Huff to lead the way defending his 126s title to another two-tie champ in with Gardner second , At State only two wrestlers from each weight class will qualify.

The Lions Cheer Group competed last week in Thornton-Julie Vasquez is their instructor. They showed them on video..they did great.

THE TOWN OF LYONS IS suing Honeywell for discrepancies in upgrading their wastewater plant, They were contracted for $5.86 million in 2010; and paid more with the flood damage, but the plant was costing the town more energy usage than it did before the upgrades. due to a higher level of oxygen demand from breaking down organic matter in water. Lyons is seeking damages for the plant’s construction, operating and financing costs along with other damaged determined at the trial. The town is seeking a jury trial.

The 4th Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Design is upcoming (The bridge will be paid for thru FEMA and Safe Schools grant with work on the design) Ice skating was closed with the sun melting the ice.so it was dangerous. The Town has applied for a grant for the St. Vrain Trail east of town. The town leases the land at the back to: of Blue Mountain Stone, 2. Spirit Hounds, and 3. Clark’s Hardware the trail has to go thru, as well as over 3 or 4 ditches-they have to get approval from the Ditch companies as well as the Northern Colorado.Water District.

Pending projects: The area South of the St. Vrain River; .A trail connection along the South Ledge Ditch and up to the “L”, Secondary Sports Court; Night Sky Compliance; Pedestrian Connectivity, Budget & long-term maintenance review, Water Rescue Stations (in 2021 budget to be along the river in case of emergency); PRC volunteering-to clean up after Holidays, summer and during summer. The last town board meeting was on March 1st, with the following:==

LaVern Johnson thanked the board and Town Trustee Greg Lowell for the Annual report he put together on all phases of the Town, dedicating the First Annual report to LaVern Johnson longtime past trustee, longtime member of the Parks & Recreation Commission-1948; the museum, square dancing, campaigns, and etc. (This report can be found under Town of Lyons web site, 2020 Annual report)

1. The Lyons Den hearing was continued until after the State liquor license hearing concludes.

2. Water rights dedication — In 2019, it appeared the Town didn’t have enough water shares to cover remaining lots, so an ordinance was passed to require shares for any new connection. After records with Longmont were corrected, it appears the Town has enough shares for remaining “old Town” lots. The ordinance was repealed. Shares will still be required for newly-annexed property, subdivided property, and areas where existing contracts require shares to be put up.

3. Business license fees were cut to $25 from $50 for 2021 to help local businesses deal with ongoing Covid issues. Business license requirements and procedures will be discussed at a March workshop.

4. Summit development agreement was approved in January). Summit said it would fence off the eroded riverside section.

5. Future requests for Lake McIntosh share use was adopted.

6. A temporary construction easement at 123 Park Street was passed;

7. Consideration of allowing lockers by Amazon Co. in town so packages would be safe until picked up by folks who live out-of-town

8; Discussion was held over the Rules for Planet Bluegrass, who said they would no longer meet with the subcommittee appointed to settle various points of discussion. such as amount of Lodging tax paid by the campers, the fees charted for parking in Lyons parks, as well as Planet’s property; the Sales tax due the town on various items by Planet as well as the vendors, etc. The two entities were told to meet and settle the points of discussion.

9. A resolution was passed expressing support for improved Hike and Bike Features

10. It was reported that the 9 140″ long girders for the Second Avenue Bridge were in place and work was progressing.with Rocksol Consulting Group for Construction and Interwest Consulting Group for Consulting Services for Professional Civil Engineering, and all is going well.;

11. The town has joined the State for winter tourism, and has applied for grants from Go-Colorado, for outdoor recreation. Brianna Hoyt is in charge

The Board then went into executive session to discuss the Honeywell Legal issues and negotiations and regarding litigation between Paul Frysig dba Western Stone and the Town of Lyons.

. PENDING PROJECTS: Redoing the NE corner of 4th and Main includes more businesses on the first floor iand adding 7 rental units on the 2nd floor.

MUSEUM NEWS+THE LYONS REDSTONE MUSEUM

Thanks to those who have donated to the Museum, used to pay the year’s utilities, etc. THE LYONS MUSEUM is sending out their yearly brochures held up by the COVID-as a Season’s greeting and update of the Lyons Redstone Museum. Thanks to Baiba Lennard for the brochure-telling about the Museum, their projects, needing money due to the COVID and No Sales, etc.. The Museum is still open virtually (if you are here from afar and need to make research call 303 823 5925 and we will make arrangements to let you in. Someone will be there on most Wednesdays (call 303 823 5271) The staff will be working on scrapbooks, scanning, and Past Perfect, long-needed-to-do jobs; awaiting until people will feel safe. Thanks to the Museum team, Terri Weir, Monique Sawyer-Long, Baiba Lennard, and Emily Walker.

FAREWELL: Pete and Cindy Moffitt have moved to Crofton, Maryland, to join their daughter, Amy, and granddaughter Leissa. Pete, the son of Daisy & James Moffitt, who moved to Lyons in 1970 and had a Nursing home on Evans Street (now apartments), and married in the 1980’s. They report they got there safe and sound and are only a few doors from daughter, Amy. We will miss them..
