Lyons High School spring sports, February 2021

NOTE FROM EDITOR: I’ve gotten notes from many of you that you’d like to hear more about school sports, but our great coaches are not also great writers, and it’s hard to find people who are willing to write about it. If you would like to help out, please contact us. We are in touch with someone who hopes to do BOYS BASKETBALL reports, which games are now starting. And, spring WRESTLING is also starting. All COVID-19 rules and precautions are being instituted. We will try to keep you posted, and will update this page when important.

Wrestling
Boys wrestling has been approved by Boulder County Public Health (BCH) to begin practice on Jan. 18th following strict COVID-19 guidelines. Wrestlers will be required to learn remotely during the season and 14 days post season. No spectators will be permitted at home matches. Athletes will be required to wear masks at all times. Further COVID-19 guidelines will be shared at the pre-season parent meeting.

Basketball
Boys and Girls Basketball have been approved by Boulder County Public Health (BCH) to begin practice on January 18th following strict COVID-19 guidelines. No spectators will be permitted at home games in Boulder County and athletes must wear a face mask during practices and games statewide. Further COVID-19 guidelines will be shared at the pre-season parent meeting.

Registration Information for Wrestling and Basketball
Online registration is open. Athletes must be registered and have a current physical on file in the athletics office to begin practice.

Winter Weights and Conditioning

Beginning February 1st we will start our winter weights and conditioning. Practices will focus on developing speed, strength, hand-eye coordination, and form so that students can find success in their respective sports. All students from grades 8-12 are welcome to attend. Sessions will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays after school:
     – HS Covid check-in at 2:50 PM at the front doors
     – MS Covid check-in at 3:15 PM at the front doors 
Please bring closed-toed shoes that provide support for running and athletic activities. Training ends at 4:30 PM; please pick students up at the front entrance.

BRIEF REPORT:

BOYS  BASKETBALL is coached by Jahmiel McLawrence with return starters: Tucker Mills, Nathan Richardson and Gage Basey. Seniors Bode Shiver and Jordan Valente are on the team.  GIRLS BASKETBALL is coached by Marcus Richardson, with three seniors returning who have all started the last two or three seasons.  which includes forward Hannah Schweiger, Avery Joy and senior point guard Jazzmyn Enny.  WRESTLING:  Lyons wrestling program has seven returning state qualifiers. They were first told their sport wouldn’t go on as scheduled due to COVID. However, seven days later the health department reversed its orders and approved variances to allow local wrestlers to compete.  Senior Oran Huff will be going for individual state title No. 3. Lions coach is Brandon Lohr.  Huff will lead the way defending his 126’s title. Other past state qualifiers include Hunter Powell, Monte Pickering, Christian Keller, Dequalyn Keller, and Logan Odell.  At State only two wrestlers from each weight class will qualify.  Regionals will be March 5-6th; with Class 2A state tournament March 12th. Regional will be in Pueblo this year, rather than Denver. 1/26/21 (See Times Call “PressReader” for more)

Boys varsity basketball team lost Tuesday’s away conference game against Highland (Ault, CO) by a score of 60-48. The Lyons varsity basketball team lost Tuesday’s home conference game against Highland (Ault, CO) by a score of 90-57.
Lyons GIRLS varsity basketball team won Wednesday’s home conference game against Dawson School (Lafayette, CO) by a score of 38-36.
