Another week-ANOTHER YEAR- gone by.. a little snow.  Ice Skating is open.  
We celebrated the New Year watching TV; Spirit Hounds  had a New Year’s celebration (with masks). Time to make your New Year’s Resolutions!! ..Let’s hope the Vaccine kills the Virus and we can have a good year. The most important resolution is NOT TO GET COVID!  Be of good cheer the New Year is here..

THE ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S DAY PLUNGE was held last Friday, with several plunging and lots of spectators.  Fun, but Cold   Over $400 was donated to LEAF.  Our thanks.

MANY  FOLKS ARE RECEIVING SHOTS OF VACCINE DAILY; THEY GO FIRST TO THE FIRST RESPONDERS AND HOSPITAL WORKERS; NEXT THE ELDERLY; NEXT TO THOSE 70 AND OVER; IT MAY BE SEVERAL MONTHS. THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT MAKING RESERVATIONS TO GET YOUR SHOTS SOONER. 
 
STEALING CARS:  We hear they caught someone who was stealing cars and etc, maybe in Lyons, from Weld County..  Thanks Boulder County Sheriff’s. LOCK YOUR CARS, GARAGES, HOUSES, ETC:  Do not get careless..many thieves make their living that way!
 
CHRISTMAS CAME TO THE LYONS REDSTONE MUSEUM this week when Gerald Roberts, head of Roberts Excavations Corp, donated $989.00 toward paving the driveway, with the Museum/Town/School paying the balance of $1000.00. 
He also donated the $400.00 for the engraved sandstone plaque, which states: . .”Paving Donated by Western Mobile & Roberts Excavation. Corp” We do thank them sincerely. (Western Stone put in the first driveway which was damaged by the rains of the Great Flood of 2013).
 
PENDING BOOK: Dan Kowalski of Pinewood Springs is seeking memories and pictures of what is now the Ralph Price Reservoir. Formerly known as the Professors’ Ranch with many houses, which were covered over by the reservoir. He plans to continue the information written by Ivan Wallin to the present day. COVID-19 cases are spiking back up; with 155 new cases and two deaths in Boulder County today with 179 deaths and over 14,476  cases in Boulder County -1677 cases at CU;  Out of Colorado’s 5.7 million people 2,114,256 people have been tested.  Gov. Polis now has allowed all counties who were “red” to be “Orange” and have some in-door dining with masks and social distancing; He has declared no clusters of groups, and has allowed 2 to be together at CU with the new order of “Stay Home” with over 5212 Cases in Boulder; 4519 in Longmont; 1045 in Lafayette; 529 in Louisville; 262 in Erie, 63 in Lyons, 25 in Nederland, and 1003 in unincorporated Boulder Count.  OVER SIXTY CASES IN LYONS. which may be low due to have Post Office Box Numbers as addresses.
      VACCINE notifications program begins with sign ups to be notified when they are able to receive the vaccine; The vaccine will provide 30,000 county residents over 70 years old or older as well as teachers, grocery store employees and other frontline workers, The county has been receiving 500-700 doses each week.

SCHOOL REGULATIONS.  (They are hoping for in-school sessions on the New Year.) Safety rules apply to all 13 of the SVVSD schools; All safety issues and improvements at the schools are being made: For in-person, when allowed: they have  Increased the air flow; added custodial sanitizing, wear masks, schedule breaks; hand sanitizing, social distancing, fewer students will be in a room and  in lunchroom-1\2 marked on each side, classrooms-desks 6′ apart; stairways-marked right side  both up and down; lunch lines-stay on right side.

Construction on Lyons School auditorium is progressing, included in the 2016 bond Issue. Good News!! (Although it cuts the parking..it will be worth it!)

LYONS PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION meeting – Jan. 11th
 
 Will meet on Monday, January 11th, at 6pm; with discussion on: The area along the South side of the river, of the LaVern Johnson Park; The completion of Bohn Park Phase 2 which will be ready for ballgames etc this spring. The Lyons Valley River Park needs plant replacement in the spring, a fence and wetland work is needed with railing and stream bank stabilization; The 2nd Avenue Bridge is being replaced with 2nd Avenue closed until May; stay out of the construction area. People are urged to use the trail along the river/ The 4th Avenue Pedestrian Bridge is paid for thru FEMA and Safe Schools grant with design and work to begin soon; a location for Disc Golf, the cost of an ice maker for the Ice Rink (the rink needs freezing weather), a trail connection along the South Ledge Ditch and up to the “L”, and projects for 2021 with long-term goals and 2021 priorities; The next meeting is Jan 11-6pm.
 
Thanks to the town for decorating the town and Sandstone park.

TOWN BOARD: January 4, 2021
 
 The Lyons Town Board met on Zoom Monday evening; There will be No Action on The Den until after their State hearing in February.   Thanks to the Town of Lyons for the Cares grants amounting to $197,000.  Checks were presented  last week to 20 businesses, and 2 non-profits this week, ranging from $989.00 to $10,000. A great help!        Discussion was held on:  PUD-MU zoning district and PUD MU Overlay District; Sanitary Sewer Repairs at 5th Avenue and Meily Street  done by  Roberts Excavation Corporation; An inter-governmental agreement for alternative transportations services between the Town of Lyons and Boulder County;  Work is continuing on the 2nd Avenue bridge with negotiations on the right-of-way proceeding;  Discussed the termination of  utility services, overlay districts, vehicle impoundment, parking and abandoned vehicle and property enforcement. Public hearings-Jan. 19th) Approved:  Development of a subterranean Pump Station between Lyons and Longmont; Accepted the Davey Tree Co. on the 2nd Avenue Bridge Project; the Improvements of the Lyons Roadway Project; the public improvements of the Lyons Valley River Park Project, and  the St. Vrain Creek Recover and accepted public improvements of the St. Vrain Recovery Project;         Discussed if Lake McIntosh Water can be used for the proposed Main Street (400-402 Main Street); The development would entail more businesses on the 1st floor and housing on the second and maybe the third floors. (including the Art Gallery building down to the insurance office; and Dance building) (Have to meet with the City of Longmont);   Discussed funds designated for Lyons Streets for matching funds to get grants for the 36\66 Corridor Trail; and discussed rule for Virtual meetings. 
UPCOMING:  Check fire hydrants as to water pressure; the water problems at Ed Bruder’s home; kids Hike & Bike Trail; Dr Cog funding, Student on Board, form a Cemex & committee on Planet Bluegrass contract; check trail by Cemetery, Honeywell Legal action, Historic Preservation Committee to meet with Planning Commission.
Next meeting Tuesday January 19 due to Holiday on Monday.

12/20/20: update. Thanks to Roberts Excavation for donating the cost of $400.00 for the sandstone plaque; and almost $1000 toward the cost of putting in a new asphalt driveway. Much appreciated. The remainder $1,000 is paid for by the 3-way lease holders. The 2013 flood washed away parts of the old driveway put in 15 years ago by Western Mobile, making it dangerous to drive or walk on.

LaVern Johnson has been writing Lyons Recorder's "About Town" social news column every week since October, 1983. LaVern became the president of the Lyons Historical Society two years after the group started in 1975, and became the Director of the Lyons Redstone Museum. She and her husband founded Red Rocks Ramblers Square Dance, Lyons, in 1958 to 2019. She has been on many Town of Lyons committees and boards and on campaigns to save things important to a quality life in Lyons. Her family were early farmer pioneers in Lyons; her parents moving here in 1928.
