Last Wednesday Lumber Liquors in conjunction with the Lyons Lions Club gifted a truck load of beer and spirits to the brave firefighters of the Lyons Fire Protection District. “I felt like these fine ladies and gentleman worked their butts off… and I wanted to help them out,” said Matthew Pearce, owner of Lumber Liquors.
With the CalWood and Lefthand fires burning approximately 10 miles to the south of Lyons (CalWood burning 10,106 acres, the largest in Boulder County history), and the Cameron Peak fire, almost 60 miles to the northwest (the largest wildfire in Colorado history), the town of Lyons felt closed in on all sides. With the fire danger at its peak, and the town on evacuation and pre-evacuation orders, it was a trying time for all who live in the tiny paradise. But the heroism of the fire protection districts was unparalleled.
“I decided (I was going to give thanks) when the flames were on the ridge just two miles outside of town,” said Pearce. “We were always packed up and ready to go, but as they did their job keeping us afloat, I wanted to do mine, and show some gratitude.” When the fire danger had passed, Pearce thought about giving a bottle of vanilla tequila, but decided that it simply wasn’t enough. He started to call different breweries for donations, “I asked breweries if they were interested, and they all were,” and it steadily grew from there.
“We are very thankful to the local community and Lumber Liquors for donating this beer and spirits to us” said Gregory Schrodt, captain, Lyons Fire Protection District. “We’ll try to reach out to some of our neighboring departments that were on the CalWood and Lefthand fires as well, and try to pass some of this goodness to them, because they were a major part of contributing to the successful extinguishment of these fires.”
The deserving firefighters will be celebrating the holiday season with a bottle of vanilla tequila and beers from Upslope Brewing Company, Avery Brewing Co., WeldWerks Brewing Co., Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, Molson Coors Beverage Company (Coors beers), and AB InBev. (Budweiser). Many thanks!
