Another week gone by..no fire..snow on Tuesday..It has been unusually warm..but is supposed to snow later this week.

HONOR OUR VETERANS: We found two plaques with Veterans names in the Museum, on which we will add the new ones to display. Thanks to Rhonda French for rounding up, and Debbie Anthony typing, the names of the veterans of the Lyons area.   If you have a question or wish to add or delete a name e-mail french.rhonda@ymail.com. Thanks to all the Veterans who  have served our Country to give us Freedom.
 
HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Many will eat alone or with a few family members.  People are urged to Stay Home; do not travel, etc.  Do Not get or give the Virus.  What are you the most thankful for?  Family, friends, home, job, health, etc.
 
The fires up Poudre Canyon and on North are almost out. burning over 200,000 acres. Over 400 structures were burned.  Take donated items to Loveland’s Recreation building.  The Cal Wood fire, started near Jamestown, and with the high wind burned around 10,000 acres and 19 homes in the  Lake of the Pines/Altona area, along the Foothills Highway burned.  It also  threatened the home across the highway..The folks at Lyons Park Estates had to evacuate, and Old South Road, including Mary Lou Webb’s goats; also Apple Valley Road and the Lyons area all received an evacuation notice, where we packed our bags ready to evacuate..the Wind is the Weapon..(Don’t unpack yet!)

VACCINE!  HELP IS ON THE WAY..Pfizer and Company have announced that a vaccine is close. Such wonderful news! Over 250,000 have died with this Virus.  The vaccine will consist of two shots three weeks apart. All are susceptible to getting it.  Thank you to those working hard to save the world. 
 
11/26/20 = COVID-19 is as dangerous as ever with many new cases spiking each day-156 new cases Monday and a total of 115  deaths and 8702 cases in Boulder County -1577 cases a CU; At the state level report l98,600, with 2355 deaths, and  86  currently in the hospital.  Out of Colorado’s 5.7 million people 1,611.564 people have been tested.  Gov. Polis has declared no clusters of groups, and has allowed 2 to be together at CU with the new order of “Stay Home.” Last week there were:  2863 in Longmont, 852 in Lafayette, 457 in Louisville, 172 in Superior, 265 Erie, 20 in Nederland,    THIRTY TWO CASES IN LYONS – and 609  in incorporated Boulder County; “STAY HOME” FOR EVERONE’S SAFETY ==See this week’s article for the full facts.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR–
(The annual Christmas Bazaar scheduled for Dec. 4th and 5th in the Lyons Elementary Gym is cancelled due to the virus. It was determined there would be too many people and social distancing was not possible.) CHRISTMAS PARADE – SAT. DEC. 4Th is being modified by the Recreation Department, such as decorated floats around Main Street, decorated cars parading around town, so the townspeople can watch from their homes,  a music truck, etc.  Stay tuned.

GRANT: (CARES ACT) Lyons business are encouraged to apply for a Cares Act grant to help with the local businesses. December 7 – Deadline to apply for the Small Business Emergency COVID Relief Grant available through the Town of Lyons. Main Street manager Brianna Hoyt has been hired to help local businesses fill out forms for the grants. This CARES Act funding can be used for businesses revenue losses. go to briannahoyt92@gmail.com. November 25 – deadline to apply for the “TOL” Care Act = this mainly has to do with reimbursement for COVID-19 related expenses, such as PPE equipment, through the end of December. SCHOOL REGULATIONS.  (VIRTUAL AFTER THANKSGIVING) Safety rules apply to all 13 of the SVVSD schools; All safety issues and improvements at the schools are being made: For in-person, when allowed: they have  increased the air flow; added custodial sanitizing, wear masks, schedule breaks; hand sanitizing, social distancing, fewer students will be in a room and  in lunchroom-1\2 marked on each side, classrooms-desks 6′ apart; stairways-marked right side  both up and down; lunch lines-stay on right side.  One COVID case has been reported in the Lyons Elementary and four in the Lyons M\Sr High. 
 
LYONS HIGH’S FOOTBALL: 
The Lions have a mix of athletic players, including seniors Sean Stevelinck, David Gardner, Camden Adams and Monte Pickering;  Juniors: Frank Percarpio, Wyatt Bashor and Anthony Thomlison, and Sophomore Dequlyn Keller.   The Lyons football team  lost their game to Akron  Friday night, and football is over for the season.  Teams in playoffs for State 8-man are:  Saturday Sedgwich County vs Dove Creek; and Sanford vs Merino

==========REPORTS========

LYONS PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION meeting –
will meet on Dec. 14th. Mark Browning is the Town Board Liaison. Isssues are: Wires and limbs are down on the Martin property and very dangerous..A quandary as to who owns it-the County or the Town-to make said repairs. The REA owns the electric lines. He reported it is also full of dead wood and needs fire mitigation. Good news-Bohn Park Phase 2 is finished except a few minor items being done by the subcontractors, as well as fencing and landscaping. The Lyons Valley River Park is mostly completed with plant replacement in the spring, a fence and wetland work is needed. Railing stabilization and stream bank stabilization is happening; Community Events-Holiday lights will go up for Thanksgiving; new ideas are being considered instead of the Christmas Parade, due to the Virus;  LMJ Park Hazard Trees-tabled to meet with the County personnel Update = GOCO Grant- The P&R Commission has applied for $220,000 Grant for Black Bear Hole improvements-parking lot with paid parking, signage and fencing; improve parking area, include step seating and new bridge decking; establish trail head at 2nd avenue. A Kurt Carlson Skate Park sign has been devised with all rules and regulations involving insurance and law enforcement; A second sign will be made posting the hours; hours for age groups, programs, and classes.
The next Parks and Recreation Commission meeting is Dec. 14th at 6:00pm on Zoom.

REPORT–LYONS TOWN BOARD

THE TOWN OF LYONS appreciates your GRIT, GRACE, AND GRADITUDE,  to everyone who participated in the challenges this past summer and who participated in many safer-at-home activities.  We look forward to the day when we can all gather TOGETHER again.  (Watch the video)  
 
The TOWN OF LYONS: Due to COVID the town has  cancelled the Christmas Bazaar, The Christmas Parade and fireworks. (which is still doubtful is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5th, is still under scrutiny, with social distancing.  Virus infections have been spiking from 200 a day-156 today, Nov. 23rd. 
 
MEETING:  The Lyons Town Board held a SPECIAL MEETING on Tuesday, Nov. 24th. Zoom, to approve the Professional Services Agreement with Western States Land Services, LLC for a right-of-way Consultant for FEMA Funded Project of 2nd Avenue Bridge Replacement..Traffic will be rerouted over McConnell for the next six months, while being constructed. 
 
LYONS TOWN BOARD:  The Good News is that the 4th Street footbridge has been fully funded by CDBG and the Safe To Schools Grant;  Design will begin soon.  The 2nd Avenue  bridge replacement has started with the traffic rerouted over McConnell Drive, which will be a 6 months project;  Progress is being made on the  Stormwater drainage and paving on 4th Avenue, between Main and Broadway and High Street  Discussion was held RV Parking on town’s buy-out lots; and grease trap requirements.  Pro Tem Browning was  appointed as the BOT Liaison to the Citizens Budget Committee;  Approved the 2021 budget with Mill Levy on Lyons property tax is 117.28; signed the ordnance for the LLC to extend the Lot 1, Railroad Subdivision at Lyons Ute Highway to 17 days; passed the Ordinance concerning Alternating\Extension of Nonconforming building and structures; Ratified the Construction Agreement with Walsh Construction for Bohn Park Phase II; Ratified the agreement with CGRS Inc, for the Lift Station Collar Assembly and waterproofing for the Eastern Corridor Utilities Project; Discussion of the 2012 Budget with 117 mills; and deducted $50,000 from town salaries, to be deducted  throughout but added $125,000 for capital improvements.

The Museum has conceded that it was unsafe for the Museum to open this season. If you are here from afar and need to make research call 303 823 5925 and we will make arrangements to let you in on a Wednesday thru the winter months

==Also a brochure and on-line of Sally Colt’s wedding dress is pending. (wife of W. A. Colt, who built the Trail Ridge Road, Highway to Estes Park, Foothills Highway; the dam near Colorado Springs, and etc. He had a son Jim Colt Lyons High School Class of 1940, whose son was killed in WWII, a son, David, deceased om 1968, and a daughter, Mary Filley; Kay and Ted Laws who lived in the Colt home on Apple Valley road in the 1970’s now of Alamosa brought the Museum an old trunk of Grandpa Colts to display. 

 The Museum was closed all season due to the COVID ,and, is asking for donations for the Museum expenses since could not open and had no sales.  (Who would ever dream we could not open!)  This is the time that we need to hear from our Lyons High Alumni and past and current residents.  We will appreciate your support. HISTORY:  Someone is asking for the history of the gnarled tree that is along the Picture Rock Trail..e-mail lavern921@aol.com, if you know anything.  (That land now belongs to the County Open Space; it did belong to Vic Olson, and previously Adam Todd.)  A trip to the court house is needed.

LaVern Johnson

LaVern Johnson has been writing Lyons Recorder's "About Town" social news column every week since October, 1983. LaVern became the president of the Lyons Historical Society two years after the group started in 1975, and became the Director of the Lyons Redstone Museum. She and her husband founded Red Rocks Ramblers Square Dance, Lyons, in 1958 to 2019. She has been on many Town of Lyons committees and boards and on campaigns to save things important to a quality life in Lyons. Her family were early farmer pioneers in Lyons; her parents moving here in 1928.
