Veteran’s Day is a federal, public holiday held on the anniversary of the end of World War I (November 11) to honor US veterans and victims of all wars. It replaced Armistice Day in 1954. (All federal and state offices and facilities will be closed for the day, including the Postal Service. The Town of Lyons offices are open.)
This page lists all of the Lyons Veterans, from Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War, Korean War, and Gulf War.
Please contact us if your family member is not listed here. We are listing people who went to school here, graduated from Lyons High School, or have spent the majority of their lives in Lyons, or are buried in Lyons cemetery. This information was gathered from Pioneer Family residents, the Lyons Cemetery chronicles, School Reunion materials, Lyons School Records, Lyons museum records, and more by Rhonda (Harkalis) French.
November 11, 2020: President Donald Trump observed Veterans Day in a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Trump did not speak at the event. The cemetery is closed to the public due to COVID-19. President-Elect Joe Biden and his wife Jill traveled to Philadelphia to commemorate the nation’s soldiers at the city’s Korean War Memorial. In a statement, the president-elect said he feels “the full weight of the honor and the responsibility that has been entrusted to me by the American people as the next president, and I vow to honor our country’s sacred obligation.”
NOTES: (This section will be removed before the end of the year and is being printed due to inaccurate comments during the November Election month) Joe Biden’s son Joseph “Beau” Biden III, an Iraq War veteran, and a major, having received the Bronze Star; and Delaware attorney general, died five years ago following a brain cancer (tumor) diagnosis. On his dying bed, Joe Jr asked his father to promise him that he would run for the office of president.
Joe’s other son Hunter served in the U. S. Navy. Hunter Biden, has dealt with substance abuse issues, and was handed an “administrative discharge” after failing a drug test for cocaine a month after being assigned as a public affairs officer in Norfolk, Virginia.. (Per Reuter’s Fact Checker: He did not receive the more severe dishonorable discharge.)
Veterans suffering from drug habits, or PTSD, or are homeless are fully being honored, and thanked for their service, on this day across the world.
