October 15 – December 3: Medicare Open Enrollment (to become a new member, or to change your plan)
November 1 – Connect for Colorado health plan = Open Enrollment Period begins Nov 1, 2020 for coverage that starts Jan 1, 2021. (Go to their upgraded pages now to insert your email.)

October-1–31 – Day of the Dead: All month there will be exhibits, dances, crafts & more in Longmont (always the biggest celebration in CO). = SEE BELOW FOR MORE DETAILS on the meaning of October 31 to November 2.

Lyons Community Foundation is putting on Facebook short video interviews of all the stores that they gave money to thru the Lyons Share Fund. (We hope to have an article about them this month in the Recorder). ~~ Lyons Chamber of Commerce is highlighting one business each week, with lots of details about what they produce and sell. They also have a contest every Wednesday. Shop Local!
November is National Diabetes Month
November is Native American Heritage Month.
October – Recommended Time to get your flu shot! Especially seniors.
FREE COVID TESTING IN LYONS:
Halloween, October 31 (All Hallows Eve): The Town of Lyons will not have a Parade or other events in town due to the coronavirus. It has a scarecrow virtual contest (see below for dates and links). And the Chamber is keeping an updated list of places in town for kids to go Trick-or-Treating (see below). The Garden Club Chili Contest Fundraiser is cancelled but appreciates a donation (see article). The LEAF fundraiser Rave to the Grave is virtual this year. No events are in Rogers Hall. Many of the stores downtown have “contactless bags of goodies” for local kids who show up in their costumes — any time Halloween WEEK.
DAY OF THE DEAD (Dio De Los Muertos): November 1st and 2nd: November 1 is “el Dia de los innnocentes” or the day we remember our deceased children. The second day is to honor the adults who have passed away.
November 1st is All Saints Day; November 2nd is All Souls Day. (These holidays are of particular importance to the Catholic Church members. “All souls” commemorates the church penitent of souls in Purgatory. “All saints” commemorates the church’s triumphant of saints in Heaven.)
In conclusion, it’s a time to remember, honor and celebrate your deceased loved ones.

October 29 – Fire Operations Update: Fire Emergency Info and an daily “Journal” of Fire Progress. The Calwood fire is 76 percent contained. The Lefthand Canyon fire is 100 percent contained. The East Troublesome fire is 30 percent contained, with 193,774 acres. The Cameron fire is at 208,663 and 64 percent contained. See our new page “October Fires Wrap up Report.”
October 26 – Nov. 6 – There are revised rules for the Town of Lyons Halloween contests; it now includes store decorations. See: Scarecrow contest:
• Voting began on Monday, October 26 at noon, as a Facebook photo album.
• Voting will end on Friday, November 6 at noon; winners will be announced by 3 p.m.
• The deadline to submit entries is Monday, November 2.
October 30 – LEAF’s Rave to the Grave annual fall fundraiser goes virtual, with Arthur Lee Land playing music. There are two outdoor sites in town where you can see the event on the big screen.
October 31 – November 1: SpirtHound Distillery: During a two-day tasting event, whisky lovers can join in-person or online for an exclusive tasting event with Co-owner and Head Distiller Craig Engelhorn. The distillery’s latest release is a handcrafted bourbon aged for 3 years on American oak barrels.
October 31 – Last day to submit your photo to Lyons Vet for their annual Pet Costume Contest. Text a photo of your pet in their costume to 303-823-6767 or email a photo of your pet in their costume to lyonsvet@lyonsvetclinic.com. Winner announced Nov. 1st
October 31 – Trick or Treat in Lyons. The Lyons Chamber has put out a notice that there is a map online that shows who/what/where there will be Trick or Treating in town. You can add your place to the map.
October 31/November 1, 2 a.m.- Daylight Savings Time – Turn back your clocks one hour (“Fall Back”)
October 30-31 – Haunted Ferncliff – Haunted House Benefit for the Allenspark Fire Department. Join us for a guided ghost tour through the haunted portions of town. – Private Guided Groups – 6 Humans Max- Very Limited Timed Reservations Remaining!

November 2 – 7 p.m. Town Board of Trustees Meeting – view online at town website, and/or read About Town by LaVern Johnson.
November 3 – 7 p.m. – last day to vote in the national election. For more information, go to our Voting Fact Sheet page, which includes instructions for persons displaced by the fires; and a discount code for a Lyft ride, and hours of the Voting Station in the Lyons Library. Almost half the state’s Registered Voters have cast their ballot already.
Halloween Events – Longmont, Boulder and Estes Park all have events going on, which includes abiding by all of the COVID-19 precautionary rules. We are only listing those that are fundraisers.
