Repeated Month-Long Events
October 1 — Connect for Colorado health plan = Open Enrollment Period begins Nov 1, 2020 for coverage that starts Jan 1, 2021. Go to their upgraded pages now to insert your email.
October-1–31 – Day of the Dead: All month there will be exhibits, dances, crafts & more in Longmont (always the biggest celebration in CO).
October 1-31 = Lyons Vet annual Pet Costume Contest.
September – October – Lyons Community Foundation is putting on Facebook short video interviews of all the stores that they gave money to thru the Lyons Share Fund. (We hope to have an article about them this month in the Recorder).
September 15 to October 15: National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October – Recommended Time to get your flu shot! Especially seniors.
October 7 – Fire Operations Update. The Cameron Peak fire is 158,000 acres and, as of Wednesday, is now the largest fire in Colorado history. It has gone from 22% to 56% containment. There are currently eight fires burning in Colorado. Plus, the Mullen fire in Wyoming has spread into Colorado, with approximately 176,000 total acres already burned. ~~ Click the link to see photos of smoke billowing from the fires from six different locations in the Front Range.
October 15 to Dec. 7– MEDICARE Open Enrollment period begins for Medicare. Lots of good tips are on the Boulder County Aging (BCAAA) pages. There is a class coming up (see Senior News for more) Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7) to join a plan. During this time each year, you can also drop or switch your plan coverage.
October 16 – “Meet the Spirits” at the historic Columbia Cemetery; virtual tour by Boulder Historic museum. Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. to Oct. 18 at 11:30 p.m.
October 17 — WomensMarch.com is planning a massive, nationwide march for all women – for trans, Black, Indigenous, and Brown women, and for future generations (all genres and ages can participate). There was one early in the year; this one is connected to the November election. (No events in Lyons have been announced)
October 17 – Sweetest Day – a day to give a token of LOVE to someone you care about. (It is the 100th Anniversary of the National Holiday; it is not an official federal holiday)
October 18 — Channel 9 Health Fair; closest location is in Boulder. register: (none in Lyons)
October 19 – Town of Lyons Scarecrow Contest. The deadline to submit entries is Monday, October 19, at 10:00 a.m.
October 19 – 7 p.m. Town Board of Trustees Meeting (on Zoom). The virtual Board of Trustees and PCDC meetings will still be recorded and uploaded to their respective meeting date, under the “Sessions” section, approximately two days after the meeting.
October 21 – A SMALL BUSINESS business-to-business sharing and facilitated conversation about economic recovery sponsored by “BOCO Small Communities.”
October 22 at 12 PM – 1 PM · Hosted by Estes Valley Watershed Coalition Online Event–Join the Estes Valley Watershed Coalition and the Colorado State Forest Service to learn about defensible space and best practices for homeowners in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). This is a FREE community event and will be a Zoom only presentation. RSVP to EVWatershed@EVWatershed.org

October 23 – LeftHand Watershed – Only 10 people! Volunteer Opportunity: Join the group on October 23, 1-3:30 PM as they build and install fish habitat structures on Left Hand Creek. Event is limited to 10 people, mask wearing and social distancing required. Sign up by emailing Deb Hummel at dhummel@watershed.center
October 26 – last day to MAIL your Ballots in order to make sure it arrives on time to be counted by Nov. 3. (don’t forget the postage!) The postmark date does not count. (see our VOTING-2020 page for info on how you can track your ballot or register. Also see brief summaries of Press Releases on modernizations of voting rules by our Secretary of State.)
October 30-31 – Haunted Ferncliff – Haunted House Benefit for the Allenspark Fire Department. Join us for a guided ghost tour through the haunted portions of town. – Private Guided Groups – 6 Humans Max- Very Limited Timed Reservations Remaining!
October 30 – LEAF’s Rave to the Grave annual fall fundraiser goes virtual, with Arthur Lee Land playing music.
Halloween: The Town of Lyons will not have a Parade or other events in town due to the coronavirus. It has a scarecrow virtual contest (see above for dates and links). And the Chamber is keeping an updated list of places in town for kids to go Trick-or-Treating (see below). The Garden Club Chili Contest Fundraiser is cancelled (see article next week). The LEAF fundraiser Rave to the Grave is virtual this year (see article next week). No events are in Rogers Hall.
October 31 – Trick or Treat in Lyons. The Lyons Chamber has put out a notice that there is a map online that shows who/what/where there will be Trick or Treating in town. You can add your place to the map.
Halloween Events – Longmont, Boulder and Estes Park all have events going on, which includes abiding by all of the COVID-19 precautionary rules. We are only listing those that are fundraisers.
