Springtime in Lyons brings notable changes

It’s that time of year for Lyons folks. No, I’m not talking warmer weather, springtime flowers, or wildlife showing up all around town. I’m talking about free acoustic-based music at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew here on Sundays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday shows have always been my favorite: Old people like me can enjoy a nice meal, some libations, wonderful music, and the company of local music fans and friends, and still be home shortly after 8 p.m.
The musical fun starts this Sunday March 15 with Expresso! and, assuming we all support these evenings with regular attendance, this series should continue throughout the summer.
Espresso! is one of my favorite bands. They merge two musical styles: American swing and Gypsy jazz. The traditions of the past come alive with powerful instrumental leads and vocals in French and English. This ‘you owe it to your ears’ music is infectious (in a good way!) and very danceable.
Sunday March 22 will showcase the Cunnane, McKay & Sullivan Acoustic Trio. Shawn Cunnane is the lead vocalist and guitar player for Crick Wooder, a band that features mellow Grateful Dead tunes. John McKay is formerly associated with the Wiley Cotton Band and Jim Sullivan with Pickin’ on Ween.
March 29 brings the Eben Grace Duo. Lyons resident Grace of The 89s writes his own songs, plays great guitar and is a good vocalist. Check this act out.
April 5 brings The High Road Home, an original acoustic band whose contemporary bluegrass sound takes listeners past traditional sounds into something new.
April 12 is one I am especially looking forward to. Danny Shafer and Greg Schochet (guitar virtuoso from the Hi Beams) are getting together for the first time since the All-Night Honky Tonk All Stars. This one will be special.
April 19 brings fun pre-war blues with the Felonius Smith Trio. Felonius is a great resonator guitar player and the band is tight.
April 26 presents K. C. Groves‘ Trio. K.C. is one of the finest in the bluegrass genre and will certainly bring entertainment you won’t forget.
Spring forth and enjoy free early-evening Sunday music – right here at home.
