How to Run for Mayor or the Lyons Board of Trustees

At the beginning of April, Town of Lyons registered voters will elect six members of the Lyons Board of Trustees and one mayor. Do you live in the town limits of Lyons? Have you thought you might like to serve your community in this capacity? Or, have you ever thought, “I can do it better than the current mayor and board?”

Now is your chance! You need to pick up a nomination petition at Lyons Town Hall and return it with at least ten signatures from registered voters who live in the town limits of Lyons before Monday, January 27 at 4:30 p.m. Candidates for mayor and trustees were allowed to begin collecting signatures on nomination petitions on January 7, and some have started already, but it’s not too late to pick up a nomination petition packet now.

After turning in nomination petitions by January 27, each candidate for trustee or mayor will receive a letter indicating the status of his or her petition’s sufficiency. If your petition is not sufficient, you are allowed to collect additional signatures on an additional nomination petition packet and file it with the clerk before close of business on February, 3.

What is the Lyons Board of Trustees anyway? The mayor and the Lyons Board of Trustees set policies for operating the Town of Lyons government. According to the Town of Lyons website, Lyons has a “council-manager” form of government, with six trustees and one mayor elected by Town of Lyons voters. The implementing and managing of Town of Lyons government policies is done by the town administrator, a paid position, appointed by the Lyons Board of Trustees. The current town administrator is Victoria Simonsen.

As part of the April 7 regular mail ballot election, the ballot will ask voters to consider candidates for the six trustee seats and the one mayor seat on the Lyons Board of Trustees. The designated polling place will be Lyons Town Hall, 432 5th Ave, with voting hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

For any questions, contact Lyons Town Clerk Dolores Vasquez at 303-823-6622 x12 or dvasquez@townoflyons.com. You can read more about running for mayor or trustee, including candidate eligibility requirements, time commitments, what to expect, and election information on the Town of Lyons website.
